7-STABLE, gjournal and fsck.
Hi, Recently I've decided to play with gjournal. Main reason was a promise of avoiding full fsck check after unclean shutdown. I've successfuly configured gjournal on existing filesystems (all UFS). And then it happened - my system had a power failure. After boot, it forced me to run fsck manualy. Nothing special, I did it before... But...

mystery: lock up after fs dump
...n live filesystems using -L. dumps are initially done to the same disk and only later are transfered to archive media. 2. both kernels are compiled with softupdates support but there are no filesystems with it enabled 3. both systems have root partition gmirror-ed, it is dumped 4. both systems have gjournal support (on 6.X it is added via a "non-official" patch), there are gjournaled filesystems on both systems and they are dumped. On June 1 (Sunday) exactly the same thing happened on both systems. At 4AM monthly level 2 dump was started and successfully performed. At 5AM weekly level 4 dum...

gmirror+gjournal: unable to boot after crash
Hi, after one month with gmirror and gjournal running on a 7.0-RELEASE #p2 amd64 (built from latest CVS source), the box hung a couple of times when on high disk load. Finally, while building some port it won't boot for no reason obvious to me. This is what I get with kernel.geom.mirror.debug=2: ata2-master: pio=PIO4 wdma=WDMA2 udma=UDMA...

Possible VFS KPI and KBI breakage on stable/7
.... Improvements for the UFS unmount or rw->ro remount, that perform suspension during the operation. The changes depend on the the suspension mechanism path, that introduced the suspension owner, and added new VFS OP into the mount method table. This might also fix the hangs with gjournal or gjournal together with snapshots experienced by some users. Since the only real consumer of the suspension is UFS, I believe that MFC would have quite low impact, if any. Corresponding revision is 183073. 2. The openat(2) and similar syscalls. The new ZFS requires openat() func...

zfs performance on fuse (Linux) compared to other fs
Hi, ok I know zfs-fuse is still incomplete and performance has not been considered, but still, before I''m going to use it for my /home I wanted a rough estimate. Another benchmark already asserted that zfs by itself, on Solaris, is a very fast beast (http://cmynhier.blogspot.com/2006/05/zfs-benchmarking.html), faster than ext3 on Linux and also faster than UFS. Interestingly UFS seems

UNEXPECTED SOFT UPDATE INCONSISTENCY; RUN fsck MANUALLY

Ok, so I ran fsck manually (even with -y), but yet it refuses to clear/fix whatever to the questions posed as fsck runs. What does this all mean? [SO]HO Software RAID5 server: which implementation should I choice?
Hello, freebsd-stable. Does somebody use some software RAID5 on FreeBSD in real production system? I want to build storage server for my home: RAW photos, multi-layer PhotoShop files and FLAC-encoded music consume a lot of space, and they should be availible both from desktop & notebook. Also, all photo-content is unique, so I need some insuranse from single HDD crash. I understand,

The crash makes the system reboot. The crash creates files in /var/crash which may be obtained

ZFS Scalability/performance
Hello, I''m quite interested in ZFS, like everybody else I suppose, and am about to install FBSD with ZFS. On that note, i have a different first question to start with. I personally am a Linux fanboy, and would love to see/use ZFS on linux. I assume that I can use those ZFS disks later with any os that can work/recognizes ZFS correct? e.g. I can install/setup ZFS in FBSD, and later use

FreeBSD 7-STABLE, isp(4), QLE2462: panic & deadlocks
Hello everybody, we recently got three Dell PowerEdge servers equipped with Qlogic QLE2462 cards (dual FC 4Gbps ports) and an EMC CLARiiON CX3-40 SAN. The servers with the FC cards were successfully and extensively tested with an older SUN StorEdge T3 SAN. However, when we connect them to the CX3-40, create and mount a new partition and then do something as simple as "tar -C /san -xf
