No network on cloned CentOS 7 installation
...computer room. I tried to clone these installations (like I did before on CentOS 5 and various versions of Slackware), but this time I ran into a problem. Here's what I did. 1. Install one computer and zero unused hard disk sectors with dd. 2. Send the image to a local FTP server using G4L (Ghost4Linux). 3. Fetch the image on another computer. 4. Boot the new computer in rescue mode and change the hardcoded /etc/hostname to a new value. Let me add that I removed all hardcoded MAC addresses from /etc/sysconfig/ifcfg-em1, which has only very limited information in it. What else could cause the...

Vsftpd vs. iptables firewall script
Hi, I'm currently setting up a local FTP server, to receive disk images sent with G4L (Ghost4Linux). This server has been running Slackware Linux before, and the Vsftpd setup was relatively simple. With CentOS things seem to be slightly different, so I'm currently trying to work things out. For the moment, two things seem to be creating problems, the simple iptables firewall and SELinux....

Bootable USB keys : which brand ?
Hi, In my daily work I'm mainly using USB keys for work : one with CentOS 7, one with OpenSUSE Leap 15.1, one with Slax Live for data recovery purposes, one with Ghost4Linux and one with FreeDOS which I use for flashing the odd BIOS. Last week I bought a set of three flashy colored USB keys in a local shop. To my surprise, none of them seem to be able to boot anything. When I write a bootable image (CentOS, OpenSUSE, whatever) to any one of the USB keys, the USB key b...

Clone a custom CentOS 7 desktop using G4L over FTP
...k to install the desktop clients. First I installed and configured one single client PC from start to finish. The I zeroed all the unused sectors on the disk, using something like this: # dd if=/dev/zero of=/0bits bs=20M ; rm -f /0bits Then I sent the disk image to a local FTP server using G4L (Ghost4Linux). On all the other desktops PCs, I could then "import" the G4L image, and the system was ready to use. Under Slackware, the only thing I had to make sure was to remove the one bit of hardcoded system information before uploading the image: # rm /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rul...

How to dump/restore a CentOS 7 system
Hello All, I guess it is very common for administrative purpose, to dump and restore a CentOS 7 system. I usually use dump/restore commands. However, I?m having trouble to handle installing bootloader and creating initramfs for C7 system. Does anyone know a good document source that details those procedure? Thank you, Xinhuan Zheng

Central hostname management?
...caldomain localhost And in /etc/HOSTNAME: localhost.localdomain The hostname gets sent to each of the desktop clients by the server. The big advantage is I can manage everything centrally from the server. One line in /etc/dnsmasq.conf, and that's it. Client installs can all be cloned with Ghost4Linux. Now I'm trying to do the same thing on CentOS 7. /etc/hosts: 127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost (IPv6 is disabled) /etc/hostname: localhost I'm experimenting with all this while reading the RHEL Networking Guide. I understand CentOS 7 is using hostnamectl to manage the hostna...
