I'm not sure whether this is triggered by Thunderbird or done regularly, but it takes longer when the server is loaded, so sometimes it seems that it is scanning continuously. We are setting up a Dovecot over a pair of NFS which mirrored with DRBD +Heartbeat, under Debian Etch AMD64 with Kernel 2.6.22-5. The problem was slow header downloading rate. We had tried to use postal to inject 500 emails which are under 5KB each, but when ever we start up Mail.app, Thunderbird or even OE6, the header download rate is terrible slow. A strace on the smbd process receiving the files from the windows box (it is mapped as a share on the 2k3 server) reveals that smbd is looking up the entire directory (with getdents64) every time it writes a file.
