getdents() with 4KB buffer - seems slow (Maildir, large inbox)
...seems to spend a lot of time rescanning the directory, especially when
the server is loaded. I'm not sure whether this is triggered by
Thunderbird or done regularly, but it takes longer when the server is
loaded, so sometimes it seems that it is scanning continuously. Since
it takes around 2000 getdents64() syscalls to scan my inbox, I'm
wondering whether the buffer size is a bit small with 4KB and might
benefit from being configurable:

Slow header fetching rate over nfs mailspool.
We are setting up a Dovecot over a pair of NFS which mirrored with DRBD
+Heartbeat,
under Debian Etch AMD64 with Kernel 2.6.22-5.
The problem was slow header downloading rate. We had tried to use
postal to inject 500 emails which are under 5KB each,
but when ever we start up Mail.app, Thunderbird or even OE6, the
header download rate is terrible slow.
Its look like a few sec for just 1

Problem with Share Size
Hi all,
I have a problem with samba : I can create files, but can't create directories.
The server has many shares, on seperated disks.
We consider two of them : one 2Tb share and one share with more than 7Tb.
Samba configuration is good, and works on many other servers, and on this one except for the large share. Permissions are correctly setted up too.
I can read/write files and

I have installed 1.1 beta 8 with fts-squat enabled. I have added the plugin section in dovecot.conf. How can I actually make use of the full text index?

smbd reads entire directory when creating files?
...xes that are flaky and
unreliable. I was hoping to copy them over to a Linux box running samba
but it is taking forever.
A strace on the smbd process receiving the files from the windows box
(it is mapped as a share on the 2k3 server) reveals that smbd is looking
up the entire directory (with getdents64) every time it writes a file.
Several times, in fact. So as the number of files grows, it churns more
and more. I'm sure most of it is in cache but the data still has to be
moved around in memory.
I know this is not necessary for writing/copying files with unix
semantics, but I wonder if...

Samba 4 slow write
Hi Jones,
many thanks for your reply.
Yepp, I'm using ACL's (Posix ACL's) on filesystem to regulate the
access of users for files and directories.
Do you mean that this is the "normal" way? These geteuid and
getegid system calls are so slow?
On the previous system (Debian Wheezy, Samba 3) I've also used
ACL's, but there were much faster than this...
