libsmbclient question
Dear Gents,
We are using libsmbclient smbc_getFunctionRead to read from a Microsoft DFS
share. Before each 64k read there are a QUERY_PATH_INFO and a
GET_DFS_REFERRAL which slow down the transmission. Is there a way to query
these only once at the beginning of the transmission and cache it?

msdfs root problems even after a reboot?
...access has
been denied."
Unmapping and mapping the network drive fixes the problem, but one of
the other admins in our office reports that after remapping a drive,
it worked for a while, then the problem came back.
Wireshark says that when the client generates this error, it's sending
a GET_DFS_REFERRAL to the server, and the server is replying with a
STATUS_NOT_FOUND.
This sounds to me like the result of the change to "msdfs root = no"
in Samba 3.0.25, but it seems that rebooting and even remapping
network drives isn't necessarily fixing the problem for us. Any
ideas?

Problem in working with domain DFS links
...This is something similar to the
Linux directory in which dirs may be actually mount points.
The issue is that when a client works with the server/share DFS it will
actually use the virtual server name inside its SMBs request. Samba
handles most of them correctly, but in the handling of
Trans2/GET_DFS_REFERRAL it does not. In this action it actually makes
sure that the server name in the request is the name of the computer
running the Samba server - which causes DFS referral to fail. See frames
1172 and 1195 in the attached TCP-dump.
On the other hand, for Trans2/QUERY_PATH_INFO for the same path S...

problems with DFS
Hi,
We have been a samba shop since way back and have used DFS quit a lot the
last years.
When we went with security ads instead of domain our dfs died.
We have tried 3.028(sun) in solaris wich we are leaving and 3.2.1 in linux,
our migration target.
For our 3.2.1 installation the config looks liket this and the problem
manifests itself as a empty share.

5~Re: DFS redirection to sub-folders beyond share
...ed "A\B", and fails to find the server.
You can see this in William Law's case: Samba tries to find a
host named "ctcfsrv9.tc.cornell.edu\tc_q\users"... but that isn't
even a valid internet hostname.
The same thing happens in our case. Samba queries the referral:
GET_DFS_REFERRAL query:
File: \w92dfs1\DFS\profiles\j\jmorzins
Samba gets an answer:
GET_DFS_REFERRAL answer:
Path: \w92dfs1\DFS\profiles\j
Node: \profiler3.mit.edu\homes3$\j
Samba is confused by the answer, and tries to connect to the wrong host:
DNS query:
Query: profiler3.mit.ed...

MSDFS redirection WinXP SP2
...msdfs shares from
Windows XP SP2, Windows 2000 and WinXP SP1 seem unaffected. I have
attached the smb.conf and the exports files that define the shares.
Running ethereal on the different clients seems to point to the fact
that XP SP2 no longer seems to be using the netbios-ssn (139) port. for
GET_DFS_REFERRAL instead its using microsoft-ds (445). I have ethereal
dumps if required.
Any advice would be most welcome.
Many thanks Dave
