splitting scientific names into genus, species, and subspecies
I have a list of scientific names in a data set. I would like to split the
names into genus, species and subspecies. Not all names include a
subspecies. Could someone show me how to do this?
My example code is:
a <- matrix(c('genusA speciesA', 10,
'genusB speciesAA', 20,
'genusC speciesAAA subspeciesA', 15,

rbind Missing Something: Need New Eyes
I don't see what's missing in my statements to add rows to a data frame
and someone else will probably see what needs to be added to the statements.
The data frame has this structure (without any data):

$ SUBPHYLUM : chr
$ SUPERCLASS : chr
$ CLASS : chr
$ SUBCLASS : chr
$ INFRACLASS : chr
$ SUPERORDER : chr

Coercing character to factor
I just downloaded version 1.0.0 and several binary libraries (VR, rpart,
norm, stataread) - WinNT version. I then converted a file from Stata 6.0
to R format by using the stataread library. The file converts perfectly
and I was able to use the VR function lda on the dataframe without
difficulty. I then tried to use the same dataframe with RPART. The model

MuMIn Problem getting adjusted Confidence intervals
Hello R users
I'm using MuMIn but for some reason I'm not getting the adjusted confidence
interval and uncoditional SE whe I use model.avg().
I took into consideration the steps provided by Grueber et al (2011)

PROC NLMIXED what package equivalent in R?
To account for likely differences between
families in naturalization rates, we fitted a
generalized linear mixed model, using
PROC NLMIXED in SAS10, with the
naturalization rate per genus (that is, the
number of naturalized species in a genus as
a proportion of the total number of introduced
species in a genus) as the response
variable, a variable coding genera as containing

1. How many unique Orders/Families and Genera there are per eco-name
2. How many incidences are there for each Order/Family and Genus there are per eco-region
I have 650 econame.
I.e for Biak-Numfoor rain forests there are 2 orders, 2 families and two genera.

Export Samba mount using nfs
Hello,
I have an Lacie NAS disk attached to an Gigabit network. Since it only exports samba I mounted on one
of my gigabit Linux boxes with
smbmount //lacie/terabyte /TERABYTE -o defaults,username=genuser,password=genuser
Now I need to export that to all my linux boxes not on the Gigabit network using nfs.
When I try to mount I get:
mount: old:/TERABYTE failed, reason given by server: Permission denied
Is it possible to export an smbmounted filesystem?
I saw another theread about this on the m...

(box-) plot annotation: italic within paste?
Dear R users,
in the example below the name of the genus will be displayed in the main
titles using the variable predictor[i] and paste.
I would like to have the genus name in italic. However all my attempts
using expression and substitute failed.
Does anybody know a solution?
Thanks a lot in advance. bernd

par code help
I am making a barplot using barplot2 from gplots where each bar
represents a specific tree species. I have formatted the species names
on the x-axis so that the genus name is above the species name and
have then rotated the labels 45 degrees to save room. This is my code:

Hello
I'm using the package ade4 to obtain classification from a .txt file. I
use the following commands:
cronquist <- read.table("cronquist.txt", h = T, row.names = 8)
cronquist <- as.taxo(cronquist[7:1])
cro.phy <- taxo2phylog(cronquist)
in which cronquist.txt is a file with a classification of 218 genus of tree
species from french Guiana.

image recognition in R
I have some images of bugs (insects) with many bugs in each image.
I want to count the number of bugs and to have an estimate of the area
of each one.
I've tried searching for an R package to do so with no success. Is this
a task that I should pursue doing in R or should I restrict myself to
specific image analysis software (e.g. ImageJ)?.
The reason I consider R would be a good choice is

iterative read - write
Hi all,
I would like to set up an iterative read & write sequence to avoid
reading and writing each file one at a time.
Hundreds of data sets to re-calculate.? The code I have works well
individually, but would like to set up an iterative read, calculate and
write changing the input and output file names each iteration.
I? think I have read that there is an R? feature using

A Modest Definition List Proposal
Howdy,
I've been thinking a lot about definition list syntax, and what I did
and didn't like about the PHP Markdown Extra syntax (which seems to be
a de-facto standard, discount notwithstanding, yes?). What I came up
with is a single character change to the PHP Markdown Extra syntax. I
just published a detailed explanation of my thoughts and reasoning for

boxplot question
I'm graphing a series of boxplots of grouped data inside a function that
passes the data.frame, the names vector, and a title vector.
Because both the data subset changes with each successive pass through the
function, occasionally the names vector turns up with only one group to
plot. This is an expected result. However, when the names argument in
boxplot has only a single name, it
