using integrate with optimize nested in the integration
...187.499393759 with absolute error < 2.1e-12 However this is an approximation of : 15*(5^2/2 - 0)=187.5, not what I intended on getting. Its not identifying that f is a function of bhat ... any advice or ways I can get integrate to not treat this as a constant? Any help is appreciated. using nrow to identify one row

I would like it to return 1 because in my larger program I am indexing the rows of large matrices according to another variable and I need to test when the resulting matrices have 0, 1 or more rows. Thanks in advance for any assistance. Best regards, Gregory Gentlemen --------------------------------- [[alternative HTML version deleted]]

Function for describing segements in sequential data
...and ends at 3, and the second segment starts at location 8 and ends at location 10. Is there an efficient way of doing this in R without having to right a bunch of if-else conditions? I know the rle function will report the length of the segments but not the endpoints. Thanks in advance. generating symmetric matrices
Greetings, I have a seemingly simple task which I have not been able to solve today. I want to construct a symmetric matrix of arbtriray size w/o using loops. The following I thought would do it: p <- 6 Rmat <- diag(p) dat.cor <- rnorm(p*(p-1)/2) Rmat[outer(1:p, 1:p, "<")] <- Rmat[outer(1:p, 1:p, ">")] <- dat.cor However, the problem is that the matrix

optimization problem in R ... can this be done?
...t some n for this value of x. my issue is writing some code to systematically obtain this value. Is R capable of handling such a problem? (i.e. through some sort of optimization fucntion, or some sort of grid search with the relevant constraints) Any suggestions would be appreciated. Gregory Gentlemen gregory_gentlemen@yahoo.ca The following is a sketch of an optimization problem I need to solve. __________________________________________________ [[alternative HTML version deleted]]

Text editors for Sweave (rnw) files
Hi fellow R-users, Are there any text editors that recognize sweave (.rnw) files? I am running Windows Vista and in the past I used Tinn-R for R files but it (surprisingly) doesn't recognize rnw files and does not do any syntax highlighting for them. Thanks in advance, Greg __________________________________________________________________ Make your browsing faster, safer, and

kernels and irc
I was in the #centos-social channel and simply stated that I noticed CentOS 3-4 were getting a lot of updates. I also stated that the CentOS 5 was one kernel behind, as in RHEL it is at -53, the gentlemen then told me that I was wrong and it was at -21. I then asked if there was a way to get a progress report somehow on 5.2, and that 5.2 has already upgraded that kernel. The result was that I was banned for being correct. I dont understand this kind of support. -------------- next part -------------...

Minor documentation improvement
Gentlemen, In the documentation for reshape, in the function signature, the argument "direction" is not listed. However, it is explained in the explanation of parameters below. I am using R 2.2.1. Out of curiosity: Is the R core team still an all-male affair? I don't think I have seen a sin...

Hello gentlemen, I've discovered an interesting failure on some machine running 4.7. It's so weird so I'd very unlikely notice it at all, but thanks to top(1): when launched, instead of displaying some useful figures it exits with an error: "top: nlist failed". >From quick look it appears...
