"smbclient -p <port>" appears to be broken in Samba 2.x
...e results on Linux versions: the 1.9.xx versions work; the
2.0.x versions ignore the port specification.
This appears to be a bug, rather than an out-of-date man page or a
misunderstanding on my part, though if it's the latter, that's much easier
to fix. :-)

Errors in /var/log/messages and "dmesg"
...the messages below. The smb_proc_readdir_long
messages are definitely smbfs messages, since they're referring to items
on the Micro$oft system.
Can anyone explain these messages and suggest what might be causing this
problem? Any insight would be appreciated.

smbclient -p <port> worked in samba 1.19.18p10, not in samba 2.x
...message, ending it with a Control-D
sent 34 bytes (status was 0-0)
--------------------
Is this a bug in Samba, a bug in the man page, or some kind of
misunderstanding on my part? The man page still proclaims the existence of
the "-p <port>" option.

Multiple login failures problem
I am yet another person who is having a problem with Win98 clients
needing to make several attempts before successfully logging in
to our Samba box. I get the "broken pipe" message in the smb.log
just like everyone else.
This did not seem to be a problem until we got a phat broadband
connection. All the Windows boxes are set to point to our ISP's DNS.
I am not running DNS on the

I also reviewed the fix list for SP 5, 6, and 6a, and it didn't seem to
mention anything relevant.
Thanks for any info!

.... (I had to log
off and log on again to the Win98 machine to see the previously missing

Note that I introduced the "nt smb support = no" to solve the same
problem described in "2.0.6: file timestamps acting strange - even with
patch." by NelsonJP@genrad.com on 2000-03-10. I'll try running Samba 2.2.0
to see if this timestamp problem has gone away, in which case the "nt smb
support = no" line will not be needed.
The presence or not of the "nt smb support = no" line in my

samba-2.0.7pre2 and file timestamps
I just installed 2.0.7pre2 on a test system.
The file "touch" problem from 2.0.6 seems to be back. Running various
utilities called "touch" do not successfully update file timestamps on a
filesystem provided by 2.0.7pre2.
I actually prefer THIS incorrect behavior over the behavior I've seen after
this bug is "fixed". The bugfix posted by Paul Eggert for 2.0.6

Samba and NT WINS server
Recently, we've noticed that our Samba servers were no longer registered
on our NT-based WINS server. The WINS entries for the samba servers simply
expired and were not renewed. Restarting samba renewed the Wins name
registration.
We have multiple subnets or we wouldn't have noticed the problem: PCs on
the same subnet as the Samba server were still finding the server via
broadcast name

Character set conversion problems with 3.0
I've just compiled Samba 3.0.0 on a Solaris 8 system (gcc, if it
matters), and whenever I run anything from the samba suite, I get a
series of error message about character set conversions:
Conversion from UCS-2LE to CP850 not supported
Conversion from UTF8 to CP850 not supported
...
and about 10 more, all involving CP850 (the "standard" DOS codepage,
presumably). Now,
