Usernames with dots

Could not get groups for user chris.palmer
# wbinfo -r MacUser
Could not get groups for user MacUser
"wbinfo -u" and "wbinfo -g" do work, giving me a list of users and
groups. Also, I can discover my UID with getent:
# getent passwd | grep chris
# GENEEDINC+chris.palmer:x:10010:10000:Chris Palmer:/home/chris.palmer:/bin/bash
And yes, "chown 10010 somefile" works.
So, two questions: Is there some way I can use text user/group names
instead of UIDs/GIDs; and, is something wrong with my system, indicated
by the bad output of "wbinfo -r&...

Default domain for winbindd?
Hello once again,
I've got winbind doing authentication not just for the samba service but also sshd and login. It's great. However, I have to give a fully-qualified username (e.g. "GENEEDINC+chris.palmer") as the username when logging in via these methods. I wondered, Is there any way to get winbindd to insert the domain and the separator for the user, when none is provided?
I checked winbindd(8). There is $WINBINDD_DOMAIN, but my expectations about what it provides appear to be...

Authenticating against a Windows 2000 DC?
I apologize in advance if this is a FAQ, but I couldn't find the FAQ document for this list. I also could not find anything relevant in other Samba documentation sources like http://hr.uoregon.edu/davidrl/samba.html.
