gencache.tdb growing and growing and...
Is it normal that the gencache.tdb should grow and grow “forever” and fill up with “RA/<hex>” posts? I’ve been investigating why our Samba 4.7.3 servers (happened with older version 4 servers too) would use such insane amounts of memory on our FreeBSD 11.1 servers (we see smbd processes using hundreds of megabytes of RAM...

gencache.tdb size and cache flush
Unfortunately I didn’t seem to have saved one of those big gencache.tdb files (we don’t currently see them). Or at least I can’t seem to find them now… A while ago when we first discovered this I posted a message: https://lists.samba.org/archive/samba/2017-December/212577.html <https://lists.samba.org/archive/samba/2017-December/212577.html> I now notice...

gencache.tdb size and cache flush
...and have smooth performance I delete cache: systemctl stop samba net cache flush systemctl start samba First of all, is it needed a samba stop to flush the cache? Even if cache flush does the job to restore performance, I am clueless about the root cause of the problem. Before flushing cache the gencache.tdb had 15k entries. Is it large? Do you think is it worth time to investigate why it grows so much or is it just normal? thank you, franz

For what it’s worth you are not alone in seeing similar problems with Samba and gencache. Our site has some 110K users (university with staff & students (including former ones), and currently around 2000 active (SMB) clients connecting to 5 different Samba servers (around 400-500 clients per server).
