Cross subnet domain logins
...remote server and connect
fine - they just cant find a domain controller.
The main server is running alpha3 under Solaris. The remote subnet has
a linux machine also running alpha3 acting as a printer server. The whole
browse list collation thing seems to be working great otherwise.

Issue with ip aliases and routing
.../lock/subsys/local
route add -net 38.98.6.224 netmask 255.255.255.224 gw 38.99.214.162
I''m pretty sure that I''m missing just some small detail but for some reason
it evades my notice. Any assitance you can provide me with would be grately
appreciated. Thank you for your time.

Am I being hacked?
I am seeing a BUNCH of these type of messages in my log.nmb file. the IP
address varies, with only 2 different ones showing up.
process_node_status_request: status request for name *<00> from IP 206.139.7.109
on subnet REMOTE_BROADCAST_SUBNET - name not found.
The other IP address is 192.68.22.214
Unfortunately, the log does not have time stamps, so I don't know when

mixed guest/domain user access to share
I'm having terrible trouble getting a share that 'anyone' can connect
to read only with out a password, but selected people who have write
persmission would log into normally. The machine will have other shares
that are access by athentication only.
smbclient will give me anon access to the share. Windows XP keeps
asking for a password...
Note i've used smbclient on an

Again - backup WINS server?
Is there any way to set up a backup WINS
specification in dhcp/Win NT/Samba?
Having my WINS server go down the last
few days made this a little more desirable,
especially since when I noticed the service
was dead, I wasn't able to reboot it for a few
hours due to usage.
Thanks,
Bill

Printers disappearing
Hello people.
We have an OLD version of Samba linking a Sun running SunOS 4.1.3 with PCs
running Windows 95. Both Samba and the OS are to be upgraded in the next
couple of months but until that ahppens we have a problem that I would like
some advice on.
The problem is the list of defined printers in Windows disappears every now
and then. It does not happen for all PCs simultaneously, or

Unix password Sync
...though I could change my call to /bin/passwd in my new user creation
scrip with /usr/local/samba/bin/smbpasswd -a, but as it doesnt actually
update the unix password this isnt particularly usefull and I would
rather not have to call passwd AND smbpasswd and enter the password 4
times.

special chars in windows filenames
Hi folks!
I upgraded a red hat linux fileserver (kernel version 2.4.18-14)
from samba 2.x to samba 3.02.
After the upgrade, the special chars in windows filenames
(German Umlaute) were no more visible to clients but either
substituted with a little black rectangle or completely suppressed -
depending on the client operating system (W2000/W98).
Within the archived list I found a hint that the

Problems with UNIX file permission
Hello,
I need to serve one fileshare to different users in different groups
( I do so ). I gave different users different groups and told samba
to make new files owned by user:group, mod 775.
But now some users have the need to write in the directory of another
group.
Is it possible to force user and group per directory and not per
share, or is it possible to create links in the filestructure

Hacked?
This morning, I noticed in my security email, that my entire /usr/bin
directory had setuid diff's set on them.
I think I've been hacked. So I installed chkrootkit from ports and ran
it. It showed not infected for everything,
except NETSTAT. NETSTAT showed infected...
I ran chkrootkit for another machine (at my office), and it showed not
infected for everything.
Both machines are

Re my query on XFS quotas under Linux, posted around the same time as
Scott's q and fix for ext2 quotas:
I've now discovered that Matthew Geier matthew@arts.usyd.edu.au
posted a fix for Linux-XFS quotas under 2.1.1a on samba-technical on 24
July.
I've applied it, thrashed it hard, and it works fine. As a result, a
site with which I'm associated will be sticking with Samba instead of
going to W2K (quotaed shares on a journalling fi...

'homes' inaccessable, but the 'auto' named home is
I'm having a wierd problem I don't quite understand. For some users
(me in particular) the 'homes' share cannot be accessed. Windows XP
returns 'the sharename can't be found' or asks for a password. Supplying
one doesn't help.
Assing the 'named' autocreated version works fine. Every time.
Then sometimes for no apparent reason 'homes' will
