Memory usage in R grows considerably while calculating word frequencies
I am working with some large text files (up to 16 GBytes). I am interested in extracting the words and counting each time each word appears in the text. I have written a very simple R program by following some suggestions and examples I found online. If my input file is 1 GByte, I see that R uses up to 11 GBytes of memory when executing the program...

putting "/tmp" to memory
"to memory" means: mounting a ~2 GByte filesystem [ tmpfs?, or ramfs? ], and put the "/tmp" on it. [ e.g.: 4 GByte ram in the pc ]. what to write in the "/etc/fstab"? I would like to collect the [ answers too:P ]: Advantages: - Memory is way faster then HDD/SSD, so it could speed things up - "SSD amortiz...

Question on Quad Opteron HP DL 585
Hi, I have a HP DL 585 server with Quad Opteron processors and 32 Gbytes of RAM. I would like to know whether CentOS 3.5 x86_64 will recognize all 4 CPUs and 32 Gbytes of RAM. I will also running EDA tools like PriteTime, and Magma on this server. Does CentOS has any issues with these tools? your help on this question is appreciated. Thanks Siva. -------------- nex...

Another GPLPV pre-release 0.9.11-pre7
I''ve just uploaded 0.9.11-pre7. save/restore should be working for 32 bits on both SMP and UP, and maybe for 64 bits although it''s not tested. If someone could test migration it would be much appreciated. The installer seems to not install the drivers under 64 bit environment... but they can then be installed manually. Not sure why at this point.

Server works fine but sometimes I can open mails slowly (5-10 sec), typical with new mails. It's intresting when I open an another old mail (with 0 sec wait), after new mail open quickly. BitTorrent

I'm wondering how much of a difference BitTorrent made in the downloads of the theora sample files. Is there a record of the number of downloads that were made, and the number of Gbytes that were sent from the server with BitTorrent compared with the number of of Gbytes that would have been sent without BitTorrent? Thanks, John

Resize command syntax wrong?
Currently the resize command is under filesystem, and takes a path to the mounted filesystem. This seems wrong to me. Shouldn''t it be under device, and take a path to a device to resize? Otherwise, how can a resize operation when you have multiple devices make any sense? -- To unsubscribe from this list: send the line "unsubscribe linux-btrfs" in the body of a message to

Is CentOS 3.5 built out of RHEL AS OR ES?
Hello Gurus, 1. Do you have any idea whether CentOS 3.5 is built out of RHEL AS or RHEL ES? 2. Can a single process use more than 32 Gbytes of RAM in CentOS 3.5 ? Is there any limitation that you experienced? Thanks for your time. Siva. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... allocating vector memory > 1 GByte on Windows XP / Vista / 7
Let me begin stating that I read all help files and faq's on the subject matter (there aren't more than about a dozen) but either did not find solutions or found them not to work. Here is the issue. I am trying to run a spatial regression on a medium-sized dataset. Part of the functions in the spdep package I use require me to allocate a vector of 1.1 Gb (mine is not a spatial SIG
