tftp times out
tftp keeps timing out when I try to transfer files. I intend to use tftp with G4U to clone
a standard workstation. I am testing it between two Dell poweredge servers running CentOS
4.3. "chkconfig --list |grep tftp" shows tftp up and running on both boxes. When connected
"tftp>status" shows it is talking to the other box
"tptp>trace" shows...

PXELinux sending a boot disquette image? Is this possible?
...manage to boot them
brom an usb stick.
The last option is to boot them via PXE (they can). So PXElinux seems a
good thing to try.
I've found a software that can copy a harddrive image to a ftp server, and
afterthat, install it on another computer.
Here's the software: http://www.feyrer.de/g4u/
But g4u boots from a floppy drive (or a bootable cd), both image files are
available on the website.
Is it possible, with PXELinux, to send the floppy image (or the bootable
cd image) to the remote computers, instead of a linux image? The floppy
image is in a .fr format, the cd in a .iso one. Doe...

cloning drives
Good day everyone - This maybe somewhat OT, but I was wondering if anyone can recommend a good tool for
cloning *nix drives. The one thing though is that I will be cloning a smaller drive than the destination drive and
would like to distribute the free space accordingly on the new drive.
Can anyone recommend anything?
Thanks in advance.

rsync for transferring harddrive images
Hi,
I have a project where I have to backup (copy /dev/hda on a server) and
recover (copy back) hardrives from the clients. I tried this with rsync
using:
BACKUP: rsync /dev/hda user@host:/path/to/image
RECOVER: rsync user@host:/path/to/image /dev/hda
There is a problem when accessing devices like /dev/hda. The transfer
aborts after a few seconds with the error message:

Basic setup for vsftpd ?
Hi,
I'm currently fiddling with G4U (Ghost for Unix), and I need to setup a
local FTP server in order to get it to work.
# yum groupinstall "FTP Server" --> installed vsftpd
Here's what I'd like to do :
* no anonymous access
* only one user (user 'install' / pass 'install')
The machine I'...

Question about dd (fill a hard disks' unused space with blanks)
Hi,
I'm currently experimenting with G4U (Ghost for Unix), a small cloning
application sending disk images to an FTP server.
The application reads the whole disk bit by bit, compresses it and then
stores it remotely. Due to this approach, it's more or less
filesystem-independent. The drawback is that it sometimes results in
huge...

Backup for linux/asterisk
After getting my feet wet with asterisk@home, I want to set up a second
asterisk box to add a call shop billing and other add-ons such as LCR.
My question is as follows. Is there a backup program that will save to
a tape drive or a USB CD Writer so if I mess up an install I don't have
to go through a complete reinstall? I saw a few programs out there but
they required X windows and from

Milestone
Well I now have a 4.0 server at a solid checkpoint. Before I start the
chore of setting up SAMBA and LDAP.
Part of the delay was I did not copy all of the needed DNS files, and I
have to reerad the BIND book.
So I want to be able to get to this point again easily.
I did not note down what options I had selected during install. Is there
some way in the install log to figure that out?

Mass installs of desktop systems on identical machines
Hi,
I'm running a small Linux consulting business here in a group of small
villages in the South of France (http://www.microlinux.fr). I'm using
CentOS for everything, servers as well as desktops. The desktop installs
are usually highly customized. My approach is to list the client's
needs, find the corresponding applications and then install these, to
avoid the bloat and

Boot loader problems and some tests
Hello guys!
I tested several boot loaders (
- windos 95 boot loader (works)
- Smart Boot Manager (sbm)
- syslinux (some versions)
- grub1
- netbsd on the g4u boot-cd
- lilo
)
on a old pc machine.
You can find my problems and results at [0].
What is really strange for me is that syslinux worked once, but
not anymore.
Perhaps you can give me you comment on the problems I had
with 'your' bootloader (partly I already have feedback) and

Ghost 8.0 Clone Filesystem with ext3 (remove resize_inode and ext_attr features)

Solution to using Ghost 8 with Core 3 and 4
Good news : It can be done
Bad News : You have to turn off SELinux Forever and remove resize_inode
and ext_attr features
from filesystem. Also if you mess this up it could kill your system, so
I would use G4U (Ghost 4 Unix) to image it first before you try.
Here's the procedure to remove resize_inode and ext_attr features
from filesystems on an FC3 or FC4 installation. Everything must be done
from
the root account.
Step 1
If you installed FC3 or FC4 with SELinux enabled, which is the default, it...

Does CentOS has problems with Norton Ghost 2003 images?
Hello all
We have two very important workstations dedicated to tasks of
development and investigation. At the moment we have installed a dual
boot platform with CentOS 4.0 and Windows XP Proffessional SP2. In
order to do backups of these machines we need to create an image with
Norton Ghost 2003.
We have worked with Ghost during several years with different
platforms (Red Hat, White Box Linux,

[Slightly OT] Data Preservation
HI All,
So I have 5 1U servers (running Windows) that have Ultra 320 SCSI
Drives in them.
The owner of these boxes wants the drives captured in their current
states to .iso or .cdr or something where if the need arises the data
can be viewed, used again, etc.
So what is the best approach? Boot from a Live CD, hook up a USB
external HD and do what? Can I create a .iso or .cdr (or some

MEMDISK-ISO: found another non-working ISO
Hi Shao Miller,
I found another ISO that doesn't work with MEMDISK-ISO.
It is the ISO of the PloP bootmanager.
It is a ISO which uses floppy emulation.
When I boot it with MEMDISK-ISO (run from Syslinux), my PC instantly reboots.
When I extract the floppy image from the ISO and boot this file with MEMDISK, it works fine.
Grub4dos iso emulation works fine for this iso.
When using Grub4dos

Switchvox feedback
I have a customer that wants to get switchvox, since I have never used
it, I would like to hear some feedback from active users of switchvox.
In specific:
1. Does it use realtime or conf files
2. Is it possible to change it manually?
3. Is SSH access to login to console/shell available?
4. Are you or your customers happy with the user interface?
TIA

Upgrading Drive, Best Practice?
...ostfix, courier, etc.) backup the machine
to another box, swap out the drives, install CentOS4, copy the email
back. It's a pain, but I'd get a clean CentOS4 box when I'm done. whee!
2) bootup with a bootdisk and use some kinda drive image utility to
backup the machine (partimage, g4u, etc), swap out the drives, and then
restore the image. Less painful, but still running CentOS3 and I have
to fumble around with those image utilities instead of good ol'
tar-over-ssh. :)
any others?
In the past I've usually just moved services from an old machine to
another one. S...
