FYI: Article on R at IBM's developerWorks Server Clinic
Hi all,
I happened to be reviewing a Linux web site that I frequent
(http://www.pclinuxonline.com/index.php) and noted today an entry for an
article on R at IBM's developerWorks Server Clinic site located at
http://www-106.ibm.com/developerworks/linux/library/l-sc16.html. I
thought that I would pass this on as an FYI.

FYI - Why RPMs are important
Someone emailed me directly when I was asking about the 8.0 RPMs, and why I didn't just compile it. Due to the production nature of our servers which run practially 24/7, I can do an "rpm -Uhv samba.rpm" and then do an "smb restart" with very little impact. If I move to non-rpm versions, I am forced to compile first, remove the RPM, which is a longer downtime, then install

Speex SIP support in the "Asterisk" PBX, FYI
FYI, the Asterisk software PBX <http://www.asterisk.org/> has now
incorporated my recent patches to support dynamic RTP payload types. As a
consequence, its SIP implementation now supports Speex, so if you have a
Speex-compatible SIP client, you can use it to make calls using Asterisk.
Some caveats:
- Only narrowband (8 kHz) Speex is currently supported; not
wideband. (Unfortunately,

[FYI] issues with integration testing
I was working on an integration test to test login/logout functionality and
came across an issue that took me a bit to figure out.
In one of my controllers, I have to test the request.env["HTTP_USER_AGENT"]
value as a portion of the app will be access by Windows CE hand-helds. in
the controllers index action i had the lines

Ruby vulnerability?
Hi,
FYI, Red Hat released an advisory today about a vulnerability in Ruby. So
far it doesn't appear in the VuXML, but am I correct in presuming it will
soon?

[LLVMdev] Improving link time building llvm
Just FYI, we discovered that GNU binutils 2.17 has a nasty bug in the
linker that causes excessive link time when building llvm. We switched
to using cvs binutils and our link times went from minutes to seconds.
I didn't see anything about this on the web pages. It might be good
information to add to the Getting Started guide.

[LLVMdev] FYI: Yes, llvm.org is down. We're waiting for John or someone from UIUC to help get it back up.
John's been contacted, and the IRC is active, but no ETA yet. It's not a
convenient hour in the TZ for UIUC folks.
When any of us have more information, we'll post here.

Just letting folks know, yes we are aware that the LLVM website and
subversion are still down. Someone will update this email thread when we
have any new information.

FYI: Useful to know on pdf printing
This is just an FYI, folks.
We've got this large poster printer. We had some, er, environmental
issues, let us say, and first I had to recreate the .ppd (HP "doesn't
support printing from Linux, and the one a former coworker extracted from
the Mac package... was for a 23", not this 44"). Then... I was trying to
print from a 6.9 box. I hadn't rebuilt the box as C 7,

Perhaps it's still possible to send wideband, while telling Asterisk
it's narrowband (the bit-stream is such that you can decode a wideband
frame even if you think it's narrowband).

fyi: libvirt issue with pvops kernel with patch
fyi: I just filed a bug report[1] for libvirt with a patch attached that
allows libvirt/virsh/virt-manager/... to show storage stats with pvops
kernel as well. Recently there was a switch from using
/sys/devices/xen-backend to /sys/bus/xen-backend which led to libvirt being
unable to get stats.
For those using Debian just "apt-get source" libvirt sources, copy the patch

FYI: lastlog on AIX
As a general FYI for AIX.
On a vanilla AIX install, you'll need to run ./configure as root
in order to find the lastlog.
The lastlog file is found within /etc/security, with permissions
to allow root and the security group.
