I'd've been happy to stay with Gnome if whoever wrote metacity hadn't
broken the function-key mappings. I use FVWM on Oracle Linux 6.9:
USER RSS STARTED TIME COMMAND
vogelke 160 Oct-30 0:00 /usr/local/libexec/fvwm/2.6.7/Fvwm
vogelke 4248 Oct-30 0:03 /usr/local/libexec/fvwm/2.6.7/Fvwm
vogelke 5728 Oct-03 1:32 fvwm -s
Can't get much lighter than that.

Red Hat is Planning To Deprecate KDE on RHEL By 2024
https://www.theregister.co.uk/2018/11/02/rhel_deprecates_kde/
That's still several years in the future, of course.
I use Mate on all of my machines rather than Gnome or KDE and I'm sure
many of you fine folks do the same.
But it's interesting nonetheless.

that) that I learned on was DEC's 'DecWindows' system on a VAXStation 2000
(under VMS). This was basically a rebranded Motif system with MWM and used
DEC's *simple* session manager. I presently use FVWM in MWM compatibilty mode
and a home written session manager written in Tcl/Tk. I use FVWM's icon box
module to manage the run-time icons for running applications. I don't have
*any* desktop icons and don't (won't) use a graphical file manager. The
session manager has a simple...

I one of the few (?) people who use "none of the above" (meaning all of the
"modern" desktop managers). I use fvwm in MWM mode and have a Tcl/Tk coded
"menu manager" program. My screen looks almost like a 1980s vintage
VaxStation 3000 running DECWindows. Right now on C6 and using as little of
Gnome2 as it will let me (one panel). File Manage set to /bin/true. No

Iconified window is still open
I tested Converter application and noticed the issue when I minimize the
main window. The window icon appears on the desktop but the application
window does not disappear. This happens under kde 2.1.1 and under fvwm
2.4.0.
With "managed" option the window minimizes normally under kde. Managed
under fvwm it does not have "iconify" window button, system menu items
"(De)Iconify", "(De)Maximize" are disabled.
Converter is free application. You can download it at:

The main feature is that lots of software is indeed confined (even
though your normal login or desktop remains unconfined).

more on Diablo II (wierd problem)
Ok, I do have Diablo II working, mostly. At the moment, it only works
under TWM (not fvwm which is what I normally use) and only in -win
mode.
The problem is that the first time that my mouse leaves the diablo
window, diablo iconifies. Not a major issue, I just have to make sure
that it's before I start playing. HOWEVER, after it's de-iconified,
the keyboard get's somewhat...

closing R graphics windows?
?? Does anyone have any idea how hard it would be/where to start if one
wanted to hack/patch R to allow X11 graphics windows that had keyboard
focus to be closed with standard keyboard shortcuts (e.g. Ctrl-W to
close on Linux)?? Has this been suggested/tried before?
?? cheers

...desktop, so I probably won't
be able to use the stock GNome applet (this would not be a problem
normally since I would just write my own GUI thingy, but there seems to
be a complete lack of documentation for the GNome applet! But I have
the source code and will figure it out eventually.). I use FVWM as a
window manager and don't use a "desktop manager" at all. I run CentOS
4.8 on my laptop (and no, I am in no hurry to upgrade to CentOS 5).
I've started NetworkManager (as root) and started NetworkManagerInfo
(both as myself and a 'dummy' user with a vanila GNome deskt...

Ctrl-Alt-F? bindings broken under xen 3.0.3-142.el5_9.1 / 2.6.18-348.1.1.el5xen?
...T from
there, using the Ctrl-Alt-F? key bindings. The chvt command works, but
the keybindings don't. It is most strange. I know this used to work
(and still does work just fine on my laptop, running much the same
system, including the same X11 configuration, with the same desktop
setup (plain fvwm in MWM compatibity mode, same keybindings, etc.).
Other than different video cards (and thus different X11 drivers) and
32-bit vs 64-bit and with xen virtualization on the 64-bit desktop box,
the system setups are virtually identical.

Using CentOS 4.4 on very old Dell Inspiron 3500 laptop; would like suggestions regarding using KDE/GNOME in low RAM and low disk situation
Hi;
I'm new to the CentOS list and I only have experience with CentOS 4.3/4.4
on desktops. I just installed CentOS 4.4 on a very old Dell Inspiron 3500
laptop. I choose the desktop option and then deleted the kde and gnome
packages because I have only 192mb RAM and 4gb disk (total). I'd like
suggestions on how to maximize the effective usage of the laptop with CentOS
4.4...as a

reference counting in ssh-agent?
Hi,
In a machine that I regularly use one console and remotely I have the line:
eval `ssh-agent`
In my .login, as per the ssh-agent(1) man page.
Problem: when I log out, the ssh-agent process persists which is the
correct behavior in some cases, but not in others. This means that
periodically I have to kill off hundreds of ssh-agent processes as they
are taking up a substantial amount of my

Hypervisor and access method for workstation VM
I am planning to set up a virtualization host to host a Linux workstation
VM. It may also host a Windows VM down the road but not on the initial
list. I'm looking for suggestions as far as:
* oVirt or CentOS? (Did I miss a CentOS equivalent of RHV somewhere?) I'm
not interested in running VMware. Is it easy to upgrade oVirt or is it
disruptive to do so?
* Does anyone have real world
