Still having trouble with copying large files
I had originally written about this problem last month
(http://lists.samba.org/pipermail/samba/2002-November/085418.html)
Since then, our company has added another Windows Fileserver which I'm
trying to back up, and they are both having the problem. Because it
happens on both servers, this leads me to believe it really is a problem
with my Samba server.
I've upgraded to 2.2.7a, as the

patch for rsync: provides "nice = N" option
Hi folks,
This is a patch for rsync 2.6.9 - I'm not sure if this is the proper vehicle
for submitting them. It's been working great for us for months, and I hope
it's seen as offering useful utility in general.

Rsync and differential Backups
Hi list,
how to perform a differential backup using rsync?
On web there is a great confusion about diff backup concept when
searched with rsync.
Users says diff because it copy only differences. For me differential is
backup from last full backup.
Other users says that to perform a differential backup I must include in
rsync command: --backup --backup-dir=/some/path but from manual page of

Rsync with NAS & Storagecraft ShadowProtect Desktop
Hi Guys,
I hope I can get some advice here which will let me better understand rsync
a bit better.
The situation is this:
We have about 5 computers in a workgroup setup running XP mainly. Via
Storagecraft ShadowProtect Desktop they run Weekly full backups with hourly
incrementals M-Sun. There is a two week retention police in place for the
backups and the business is open 7 days. The backups

Copied file becomes infinately large
I'm trying to back-up a set of windows machines onto a single Linux
machine, so that I can easily make a tape from there.
The Linux Machine (RedHat 7.3, running samba 2.2.6), is set to use
mount.smbfs to log in to each machine's Administrative share, and copy
several files from the hard drive.
One machine is giving me a great deal of difficulty, however.
Our last remaining window's

Copied file becomes infinate
Colin,
I know that on Windows, when you copy and Immensely large single file,
there are times when it will show something like 100 years in minutes to
complete the copy.
Your issue could be related to that issue with Windows. You say that you
copy files over from several other systems without a problem. Are those
files on the other systems single small files or are they also in

pseudo incremental backup solution
Hello dear list!
Just wanted to tell you that there's a simple and somehow smart
backup solution using rsync named ccollect [0].
It uses the hardlink feature of rsync to create fullbackups with only
minor size differences (it uesd cp -al and pax before).
I would be happy for any critic about the software, the documentation
the configuration style (cconfig [1]) and the idea itself.
Sincerly
Nico

hardware question
I recently asked this question, but I didn't get an answer on this part
of my question:
What hardware would be able to do this with ease:
I must install a samba server as PDC for my school. The server would
authenticate users using openldap (on the same server). And if possible,
I would also run an intranet on it (apache, php, mysql).
There would be about a hundred (maybe 150 later on)
