SAMBA 2.0 Packaging request
I do not know how many others are in this case, but I must use either floppies or tapes to transport the Samba product after I download it. Floppies are more convenient than tape because the tape medium is TK50 on OpenVMS and it is very slow. Is is possible to produce the production release in a two archive set so that it can be more easily sneaker-netted? Thank you, John Malmberg

Vsftpd configuration problem
Greetings, Beginning today, I started to receive the following when ftp'ing to my CentOS 6 machine: ncftp /home/pyz2 > dir connect failed: No route to host. connect failed: No route to host. connect failed: No route to host. Falling back to PORT instead of PASV mode. I can make a connection, but I can't get a directory listing or transfer data/files. I...

File types and performance
Hello, I am wondering if Samba cares what types of files you are putting onto the server and if this effects the performance of the server. Attempts to copy various file types to my Samba 2.2.5 RH7.3 server have given mixed results. I appreciate any help on this matter. Thank you. Sincerely, Robert Dempsey Atlantic Dominion Solutions

Samba versus NFS/ftp
I ran some tests today, ftp'ing a 288MB file to the server was completed in 29.3 seconds, ~10 MB/sec. This is 3 times faster than Samba! which needed 82 seconds using drag/drop on W2K. NFS needed 39 seconds. I have read the 'performance tuning' documents and have done all/most of the changes they recommend but...

How to improve Samba write performance?
...lso have Win98 clients but don't have a suitable utility to time their Samba I/O performance.) I'm satisfied with the read performance of my Samba server, but would like to improve on the writing. There's obviously something wrong when writing a file via Samba is 4 times slower than ftp'ing it. Any write-specific advice? Thank you. ==================BEGIN FORWARDED MESSAGE================== I've got a couple problems with Samba<-->OS/2 communications. Residential router w/ QoS support?
Did anybody ever come across an affordable, residential cable/dsl router with support for QoS? The ones I've seen so far (Netgear, D-Link and W-Linx) do not seem to support it. I noticed that even email can damage a G.711 stream on an 128kbit uplink, leave alone file-sharing applications. I understand this is strictly related to *, but nevertheless of interest to many of us. Thilo

What to do before launching v1.0?
...o v1.0. I’d be really grateful for comment. Sorry for the long post, but I wanted to get few things off my chest in one go. - clear down log files - build a rake task for backups (thinking backing up the database and any paperclipped images that users have uploaded (cron?) to a tarball nightly and FTPing that tarball off the webhost nightly) - build in some sort of dynamic error alerting system to email when errors occur (a la hoptoad / exception_logger / make one) - clear down as much space as possible on your webhost (breathing space / housekeeping) - clear out as much unused code as possible...

Samba 4 + Windows XP very slow - especially noticeable with many files
Hi, After our upgrade from Samba 3.x to 4.1.6 we are having major performance issues. Today, I've been able to nail it down to a simple test case. What strikes me is that Windows XP takes about 25 seconds for one job, while it only costs 3 seconds on Windows 7. I have two tests: 1000 files of 10k each (total ~10Mb): * Linux on localhost or a remote host (1GE or 10GE): 5.5 seconds *

Slow Samba share--why?
I trying to figure out why copying from a Samba drive to Windows XP is slower than an FTP transfer beween the same two machines. To copy the 110 MB file from Samba takes 400 seconds, and to transfer the same file by FTP takes 41 seconds. From using ethereal, and comparing a fast smb copy to a slow smb copy, I can see that the slow copy has a _lot_ more tcp traffic for a SMB single...

Gigabit Throughput too low
Hi I was wondering if you ever got better performance out of your Gigabit/IDE/Fc2? I am facing a similar situation. I am running FC2 with Samba 3.x My problem lies in not that I am limited to 10 MBytes per second sustained. I think it's related to this pdflush and how it's buffers are setup. (I have been doing some research and before 2.6 kernels bdflush was the method that was used and
