XP Pro client cannot access stand-alone linux samba server
Hi, I am trying to set up my internet connection sharing linux box as a stand-alone samba server. When i try to access the server from a Windows XP Pro client using \\192.168.0.1 i get a dialog box asking for a username and password. I duly enter this and the dialog box immediately re-appears without connecting me to the share. There exists both a samba and linux account with the same

XP Issues
We have a samba server acting as a PDC for approx 100 Windows 2000 workstations, and it has been doing so very well for the last year. We just purchased some XP Pro machines, and using the registry edit that's listed in the docs, we were able to get them on to the domain. The issue is that the very first time they try to view any drives mapped to the Samba server, it hangs for a good 30-40

Changing file permissions in Windows XP with a samba PDC
Question about changing file permissions in Windows XP when running samba as a PDC. If you hit Properties and go to the security tab, instead of listing the proper group/user names it lists the full SID. Is there a way to get Windows XP to map these to the proper user/group names? I am using LDAP as a backend with Samba. Thanks. -- James

Hello all.... I need help and I'm just about at my wits end. First let me state that I can not give logfiles in email since the Samba servers are on the secure side of my world and contain sensitive information. If by my stating my problem, I am hoping that someone will point me in certain directions that I have not tried. We have two samba servers on our site. Both are running Samba 3.0.0.

Microsoft hotfix MS04-011, breaks Samba password change.
Hi all, I wanted to give an update on this as I know this MS Hotfix is critical and must be applied to protect against the (latest) Microsoft worm. I think I've found the problem in the code, and am currently testing a fix for this (not in the release to others to test stage yet). As soon as I'm reasonably confident I'll put a patch out there for others to test, and we'll

The order of returned filenames and broken Windows programs.
We use a proprietary MS-SQL based document imaging application that has recently added the ability to import Adobe Acrobat files. However, the company who wrote the application was assuming that when they query for files, the resulting returned list would be in alphabetical order. (This is important because the user must select one or more pdf files from a list of thousands -- not easy when the

Any Windows XP SP2 RC2 Experience?
Earlier today I installed Windows XP SP2 RC2 onto two of my production machines. My test boxes were fine, but the two production machines I installed them on failed to print in Adobe Reader and IE. I've got a Samba 2.2.9 DC with a CUPS printing backend. Anyway, I've backed off the SP on both production machines, and I'm going to try to replicate the issue with another test box, but

Better way to enumerate hosts in domain?
I'm writing a script to pull some application logs off of machines on my domain. In order to enumerate the machines I'm just grepping through wins.dat, but I suspect that there is a better way of acomplishing my goal than that, possibly using the "net" command or nmblookup. Right now I'm doing: grep \#00 /var/cache/samba/wins.dat | cut -d " " -f 1 \ | cut -d \#

More Printing Fun (Point and print not working)
In regards to slow XP to Samba printing with SP2: I received an updated driver from the vendor that fixed the problem* (to a degree.) So, now I can go back to using point and print instead of using IPP to print directly to CUPS. Oops, no I can't. When I try to install the point and print drivers in Windows, the drivers transfer to the server, but when I click OK to close the properties
