How do I increase the fd limit on OS X?
...not sure how to
do this. There is a command built into tcsh that allows me to do this
called limit, but sudo limit 4224 doesn't work, and usually dovecot is
started from the rc.local file if I recall right, and I'm not sure how
to set this up from there. Any advice.
Thanks,
Rob

stored on my IMAP sent folder on the server (running dovecot 1rc15, and

I can't find any hints in the mail.log on the server or the system.log

Any idea on how to troubleshoot this?
Thanks,

Why my Evolution cannot delete emails in dovecot IMAP folder?
I use Ubuntu Hardy, get mails locally and run dovecot listening on
localhost. I run Evolution and have it connect to dovecot, so that I
can access my mail in IMAP and be able to use mutt from remote.
So far so good. It works. However, my problem is that Evolution cannot
delete any messages. That is, when I click DELETE in Evolution,
Evolution no longer sees the message , but the message is still

Suggestion for quantile.default()
I'm not sure who is responsible for quantile(), but I assume they read
this list. Ivan Frohne and I have produced a revision of the
quantile.default() function which enables the computation of alternative
sample quantile definitions. The code and .Rd file are attached.
This enables the user to produce quantiles that are equivalent to those
in various statistics package. There is a type...

when I was trying to apply some rules to move messages from one
mailbox to another. Things hadn't been working well and I had
recently upgraded to alpha 2, so I moved all dovecot* files in my

Things then seem to work better.

login_process_per_user referred to but not present in dovecot.conf?
Hi,
I find login_process_per_user referred to in the comments in
dovecot.conf, but never set. Is this a typo and should it be
login_process_per_connection or what?
Thanks,
Rob

Trying to compile again
I'm currently running a pre 1.0 version of dovecot. Months back I tried to
compile beta6, couldn't due to some mysql client libraries issues, and gave
up. I'm now trying again with rc6.
This is on a fedora core2 box, with postfix 2.3 and mysql 5.0. The error
I'm getting when I run make is below. Any help would be greatly
appreciated, thanks! I'd really like to get up to

unexpected behaviour of rnorm()
Hello everyone.
If I do
f <- function(n){max(rnorm(n))}
plot(sapply(rep(5000,4000),f)) #[this takes my PC about 30 seconds]
then I get something quite unexpected: gaps in the distribution. For
me, the most noticable one is at about 3.6.
Do others get this? Is it an optical illusion? It can't be right,
can it? Or maybe I just don't understand the good ol' Gaussian very

Needed: Understading runif() output :-)
Dear all,
I have been trying to understand what runif() is telling me.
I am generating lots of numbers (billions and billions (wow, I''ve dreamed
about saying that for many years... :-) ), for a distribution that has the
following quantile function:
1 / (2 * sqrt(1 - p))
(that is, the distribution has a lower cutoff)
As you can imagine, this has rather heavy upper tail. I was

Timeout while waiting for lock....
Hi,
I'm very new to administering mail, and this is surely a newbie
question. I have my own IMAP mail server because I use my email as a
way of filing important things, and I subscribe to a number of lists
that I like to archive. I have about 40 mailboxes with up to 80,000
messages in some, and one with 40,000 messages is almost a Gigabyte in
size. The total size is around 4

Moving messages takes a longgggggg..... time. (Timeouts?) dovecot.conf help?
Hi,
I'm trying to get dovecot set up better. I am using 1.0alpha3. It
takes a long long time to move messages for some reason. It seems it
may be a timeout thing, because neither the client or server is using
any cpu time or disk i/o or network to speak of. (To move maybe 400
messages, it seems to take maybe half an hour, maybe longer.) With
alpha 2 I was getting messages from
