Defining function in template files?
Hi, Is it possible to define a function in a template file? For example, I thought it might be a good idea to define my Debian systems'' /etc/apt/sources.list files based on what level of stability and freeness a system should have. So I have this puppet code: #---------- apt.pp ---------------- define apt-sources-list (the_stability=1,the_freeness=1,the_url="http://mirror.phy.bnl.gov/debian/") { $conffile = "etc/apt/sources.list" file { "$conffile": path => &q...

R help search and Java(tm)?
I found this great search source("http://www.statslab.cam.ac.uk/~djw1005/Stats/Interests/search.R") helpHTML() Has (or will) this become the standard search method? Is R 'Free Software'? The dependence on Java seems a bit of a pain for 'freeness'. Did the above make it into CRAN? Cheers, Dan.

high bitrate quality?
Hi all, I used vorbis several years ago because of its freeness and VBR, but after playing ha.org and getting an mp3-capable discman, I switched to APS and API mp3 encoding. Now, I am liking musepack a lot, but the flexibility is more "there" for the vorbis format, including players, tagging comments (lyrics in the comments - killer idea!), etc.....

R CMD javareconf in r-base-dev 2.6.0
Hi Dirk, hi list, I just ran into a slight problem while building the recommended packages for CRAN in a chroot environment against the fresh backport of your R 2.6.0 packages. It seems that R CMD javareconf wants to change files in /etc/R during the build, and since I am not building the packages as root in my etch chroot, this fails, even if I am using fakeroot. My workaround was to simply

License status of CRAN packages
...aren't. The trouble is that you cannot tell and you end up labelling packages as 'maybe not free' even if they are (an example here may be mlbench). That does not scale. Ultimately, I fear we need someone to sit down and classify CRAN sources packages into appropriate buckets of 'freeness' of use, redistribution etc. And/or to remap all packages to a smaller, saner set of licenses (as e.g. those in licenses.db). Section 1.1.1 of 'R Extensions' is quite clear about this, but I would like this to go further. Given that install.packages() does not check, I am afraid th...

Dreamweaver CS3 and Wine 1.1.1
I took the plunge and got rid of my windows machine (well I have a separate HDD with XP, that I use in a "trayless tray" when needed!), and turned to Ubuntu. I had seen things todo with wine before, and as such tried it out quite quickly with Dreamweaver CS3. As I cant be without that one for long (not that I cant write the scripts!). I was happy to see thismornings Wine update, pitty

Licensing and Copyright
Hi all, I fear this discussion will quickly devolve into a recursive flame- fest, but it needs to be broached, so here we go. Note that I kind of think this is more of dev topic than users, but I want to make sure everyone knows the conversation is happening and can easily participate. This is also likely to be the first of a series of conversations I''ll be starting to try to
