in honor of fredrick sanger
Hey john mark. I saw that you recently mentioned some work using gluster for sequencing data (where there are alot of intermediates, and sometimes, huge raw input data sets that get denoised). http://184.106.200.248/2012/07/improving-high-throughput-next-gen-sequencing/ Well, today fredrick sangar, the guy who pretty much created the technology necessary for generating "bioinformatics" data, has passed away. In honor of fredrick sanger, it might be interesting to see a community post on all the genomics and bioinformatics organizations out there using gluster to store tera/...

Rsync service on Win2k?
...onf --daemon runs it from a bash shell, but I can't seem to start it either using cygrunsrv -S "rsyncd", or from the Services manager. I've also tried with --no-detach and -e CYGWIN='binmode tty ntsec' on the cygrunsrv command line, as described at http://acd.ucar.edu/~fredrick/win2k/rsync/ Lastly, I tried getting it running via srvany.exe (from the Win2k resource kit) and srvinstw, with even less intelligible output. Any help would be very much appreciated. Cheers, -John cygrunsrv's error message: $ cygrunsrv -S "RSYNC" cygrunsrv: Error starting a se...

Missing model error
I am storing a shape object in a session, and somewhere I picked up that to make sure I can restore the full glory of Shape, I needed this line in ApplicationController model :Shape So, of course, I also have a file /app/models/shape.rb All was working well, but then I decided I''d rather name the model MyShape. So, I - edited the filename to "my_shape.rb" - edited

ActiveRecord Unexplainable SystemStackError - Only in WEBrick
This SystemStackError is driving me crazy. It only takes place when testing with WEBrick - I can''t reproduce it with any tests. It is caused by calling the "missing" id method (base.rb:2435) on my ActiveRecord class. WEBrick and my tests are running as the same user, with a `ulimit -s` of 10240. Plus the query works sometimes so I don''t think this matters.

Is Rails Appropriate for our Project?
I realize this subject is redundant for this community, but I''m hoping the Rails community can provide me with some additional ammunition to help push a rails project I''m pitching over the proverbial tipping point at my company. The Situation: I''m the lead architect at a large bay area retailer. My team and I are currently suffering through the process of paying

Access Registry Remotely
Can wine be used to establish remote registry connections? I have written a application that collects performance information from a windows machine. This is done via registry calls, e.g. To get a buffer containing a list of all performance objects on a remote machine... Generate a time series from a data frame
I imagine this is in the documentation somewhere but I haven't been able to find it. I have a data frame (octets transmitted on a network interface, a sample is appended) that I wish to convert into a time series. The as.ts is close to what I want but not quite right. e.g. > octets <- read.table( "sample/time-series/typical-octets-in.data", header = TRUE ); >
