memcache-client working for anyone?
I''m at the bloody forehead stage, so I figure it''s time to ask. After
installing the robot coop''s memcache-client which everyone apparently
recommends, it refuses to work because the rails cache.rb is invoking
the read() method on the cache, which it _does not have_. Their library
has get() and put() but no read() and write() as rails expects. What
gives? Is

[LLVMdev] making cygwin nightly builds available?
Hi,
I'm looking into LLVM, and I must say it looks supremely cool. However,
I'm having a hard time getting anywhere with it, since I don't have a linux
machine here, and cygwin seems like a bit of a second-class citizen.
The instructions to build the cygwin binaries are outdated, so I have
to just make some guesses as to what the right thing to do is, and
I'm apparently not

anti-R vitriol
A colleague is receiving some data from another person. That person
reads the data in SAS and it takes 30s and uses 64k RAM. That person
then tries to read the data in R and it takes 10 minutes and uses a
gigabyte of RAM. Person then goes on to say:
It's not that I think SAS is such great software,
it's not. But I really hate badly designed
software. R is designed by

Backslash Escaping in View
Ok, I''m hoping this won''t be a forehead slapper, but take a look at this code:
physician.name.sub(/''/, "\\''")
I''m trying to substitute a single quote with a backslash and a single
quote. This seems pretty simple right? Well, someone kick me and
tell me why it''s not :)
Here''s what I''m getting if the

GraphicsContext demo
Hey All,
I''ve just commited rev 1505, which now includes a GraphicsContext demo, just
in time for a release. *wipes forehead* So far, it''s looking pretty good.
BTW Alex, another bug came up while working with GraphicsContext, but wasn''t
something as major that could prevent me from completing the demo.

Win7 pro trust relationship failed
Out of the blue, after working flawlessly for years, I suddenly cannot log
on to my samba 3.5.6 domain with one particular Win7 Pro workstation.
Nothing has apparently changed - Win7 updates applied recently, but I was
able to successfully log on after that. Nothing has changed on the DC.
Error message is that the trust relationship between the workstation and the
primary domain failed.

Findme problem
Greetings all,
I've been working on having Asterisk put a call through to two different numbers, and give the call to the first one that acknowledges by pressing the 1 key. I found an example on the wiki, but I can't get it working.
When I answer the call I hear the message telling me to press 1 to connect, and as soon as the message is done, the call is connected. In other words, it

ActionWebService and WSDL
The suggested approach for developing a web service using
ActionWebService appears to be start by defining the API you want and
then you can generate WSDL. I want to start from WSDL. I''ve tried
wsdl2ruby but the Ruby code it generates does not appear to play well
with Rails. Is there a way I can get what I want? I''m new at this so if
the answer is a forehead slapper,

Icecast2 access problem
Thanks (slapping forehead with hand). I completely forgot that my
upstream is limited to 128kbs. That would definitely cause a problem as
you have mentioned. For the time being, I re-encoded the files at 56kbs
to see if that helps. If so, I'll look into using a even lower
bandwidth streams. Let me know if you are successful using this lower
bandwidth stream.

Converting strings with internal delimiters into lists
Hi UserRs,
I know that there has to be an easy way to do this in
R (probably easy enough that once someone clues me in
I'll smack myself on the forehead for not figuring it
out myself), but my searches on my own have not
yielded any hints.
I have many fields in my dataset that participants
entered as "free lists" - i.e., the field constitutes
a varying number of names each

Verifying backups
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1
Yes, when it comes to local copies cp is significantly faster than
rsync. Without --link-dest there isn't much advantage to using rsync
for backups. The only thing you get beyond cp -au is --delete.
Also, when it comes to static data like media files I like to keep an
md5 file around with checksums for all the files. That way I can

[LLVMdev] making cygwin nightly builds available?
Hi Marshall,
LLVM *is* cool .. just not on cygwin! :)
Sorry for the sad state of the cygwin build. I had hoped to have it
cleaned up by now but many other things have been taking my time.
Although the build has been succeeding in recent days, I'm not sure it
will buy you anything. NONE of the nightly tests pass on cygwin. Until I
can get some time to figure out why that is happening, I doubt

Verifying backups
Just chiming in slightly off topic.
As a first step if you are going to be backing up files to some media with a computer it would be a really good idea to ensure, that the hardware being used is not faulty. I am not saying that your hardware is faulty. However, it would be worth checking this somehow. Check the drive media for bad blocks, check that all the cables are working well. Ensure the

[LLVMdev] Why does "uwtable" prevent optimizing Invoke -> Call?
Hi,
in r176827 the optimization that turns invokes with empty landing pads
into plain calls was disabled for invocations of function with the
"uwtable" attribute.
But given this code:
struct S { ~S() {}; };
void blackbox();
__attribute__((__noinline__)) void inner() { blackbox(); }
int foo() {
S s;
inner();
return 0;
}
int bar() {

Shorewall 4.5.4 Beta 3
4.5.4 Beta 3 is now available for testing. I apologize for the
back-to-back Betas but I guess it''s better to find these problems during
the Beta period rather than later.
Problems corrected:
1) This release includes all defect repairs from Shorewall 4.5.3.1.
2) When EXPORTMODULES=No in shorewall.conf, the following errors were
issued:

Xen over SuSE 10.3 - Can''t find drive to boot with...
Dear List-Colleagues:
I have been working on installing Xen on Suse 10.3 for some time now. I am green as grass - both a total newbie to Xen and a relative newbie to Linux (as well as a total newbie to SuSE).
Currently, I am at the point that when I click on the Xen entry in my grub loader I see Xen starting and running through much of its early setup. Eventually, however, it quits on
