Protection for removable hard drive
My apologies if this is a bit off topic... I am going to start doing backups to removable hard drives and I will need to send these hard drives to an off-site storage facility. I am looking for some way to protect the drives after I pull them out of the system. I was hoping to find some kind of clamshell enclosure similar to what is used with external hard drives, but so far I haven't found

VQ codebook sanity check (please help)
...s is it! The last piece needed for *real* bitstreams. To that end, I have a decent VQ codebook generator running. I was originally using some farily typical merge/split algorithms and then decided that the right way to do this was to model a VQ codebook as an m-dimensional set of bubbles (like a foam). I know there are folks reading the list that understand the details of vector quantization, so I thought I'd sanity check my assumptions and approach. *I* think what I'm doing is perfectly sensible (and I'll point out that the code works), but playing with VQ is new to me, so others...

Possible bug in Vorbis
...using RC2, so perhaps it's already been reported and cleared up. While listening to a recording of Moxy Fruvous's "Gulf War Song", I noticed that the vocals at the very beginning clearly have their high frequencies quite attenuated. Sounds like it was recorded through a piece of foam. Earlier this week I check the original recording and was unable to hear it. Going through my music, I've been able to fund a few other oggs that seems to suffer from this phenomenon. Is this a known issue? [RFC] I've made a huge mistake
...hemy! (3) The CMake open source community is too responsive! I file bugs and they fix them. This is unacceptable. Since they fix my bug reports I can't claim to my boss that I'm blocked on someone outside the company fixing something anymore. This is a really big problem detracting from my foam sword fighting practice time. (4) People expect it to work. With the autoconf build everyone kinda expected it to fall over in anything other than non-basic uses, and we were all ok with it. With CMake people expect things like 3-stage clang builds to just work out of the box. It is completely exh...

Help on drawing stars and radars in R (update)

I have put in these commands in a script window: stars(shampoo1[, 1:6], locations = c(0,0), radius = TRUE, key.loc=c(0,0), main = "Ranked Results for the Sensory Evaluation of the Shampoo" , frame.plot = TRUE, key.labels = c("Foam Texture", "Skin Feel", "Rinsability", "Wet Combability", "Wet Feel", "Odour"), lty = 2, ) This gives me a black and white radar which is fine. Now according to the reference manual to colour the stars i need to add: col.stars = rainbow (30...

rant on browser makers (was something about updating TD''s)
...ove IE 6 and I agree, hahahaha. Actually, I hate Mozilla''s box model (I know it''s the w3c recommended one, but it''s flawed. Width and height should include padding and borders. When I say a box is 2 feet wide, I don''t mean if you subtract the box walls and the foam. /end rant). I almost want to like Opera, but after spending an hour trying to figure out why doing this doesn''t work in Opera, I now am extremely leery of it: textarea.value = ''something''; textarea.style.visibility = ''hidden''; ... more code ... textar...

Noise Cancellation of Server Noise
Has anyone come across a device that could cancel out the noise from servers, ie. the fan noise? I have a server rack near my office and would like to see if i can decrease the noise level. It would seem to me that the steady drone of the fans could be cancelled out to a large extent.

SIP to IAX2 with delayed echo
A Polycom 550 and a IAX client (Mozphone and ZoIPer were used) are having a conversation. Call quality is reported as good except for an echo with a 3 second delay. Most of my searches are saying echo happens only on the PSTN piece, but there isn't one here. Can someone point me in the right direction? 1.8.3 - IAX - echo - jitterbuffer
I'm using iaxagent on a Droid X to connect by IAX to 1.8.3 at the office. 1.8.3 has sip phones. The audio is fine on the Droid X side. On the office side, they hear an echo of _their_ speech, not mine. The office uses sip-providers generally without any echo problem. Where do I start to figure this out? How do I narrow it down? Can I figure out if it is an iaxagent problem? Could using

Am I attempting the impossible?
Hi all, After Googling around a while, I've found bits and pieces of my puzzle, but never someone who's got the whole thing. Here's what I'm trying: - Run MS Access 97 and MYOB - Under FreeBSD 5.3 - With multiple simultaneous users (X Terminals) Access 97 and MYOB are the only Windows programs we'll need to run, everything else will be done with "native"

Any quiet 24 port POE switches out there?
I have an upcoming install which places the switch close to some employees in a quiet work environment. Can anyone recommend a quiet 24 port POE switch? The Linksys SRW224P behind me right now would be objectionable, I'm sure. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... URL:

More on the archive bit saga
Thanks to all that have helped so far. I now have a test server running on Ubuntu 6.06 and Samba 3.0.22. I also configured ACL and user_xattr on the filesystem running the shares. But now I have very strange behavior that I hope someone has a clue about. User smith can open two files (foo.txt and faa.txt) with Notepad, Wordpad and Microsoft Word. The behavior for all three is different:
