Is there a Centos 6.x to Centos 7.x guide somewhere? What has changed, that I
need to learn about as an admin, before I jump in and flounder?
thanks,

PAM overrides PermitEmptyPasswords
I noticed while investigating Debian Bug #93200
(http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=93200&repeatmerged=yes)
that sshd refuses a login if /etc/pam.d/ssh doesn't specify "nullok" after
the pam_unix.so module -- is there any way to resolve this problem? It seems
that OpenSSH should override PAM in this case, someone posted a patch on 6/19
that appears to address this

Off topic: Tcl/Tk outside R.
I'm trying to learn about the tcltk package and its uses. Floundering
around a bit ... Have discovered Peter Dalgaard's articles in R-News,
which should help. Also James Wettenhall's suite of examples look like
they might be enlightening, even though the indications are that they
are
Windoze oriented.
Be that as it were, I decided to fool around a bit with Tcl/Tk *outside*

Wherefore whitebox?
Well,
I'm a recent convert from WBEL. My biggest concern with CentOS is that the
community here seems to want to be more than a recompile of RHEL.
But WBEL is floundering, what with Katrina and Rita, and there really being
only 1 developer behind it, etc.
I offer an automated shell script to switch from WBEL4 to CentOS4 (easy, it's
hosted on my home DSL line!) It assumes that

sshd hangs on logout -- is this a bug?
In the changelog, there is an entry:
20001129
- (djm) Back out all the serverloop.c hacks. sshd will now hang again
if there are background children with open fds.
Does this mean that this is regarded as expected (and correct) behavior, that
should not change in the future, or does it mean that this behavior is a
known problem that someone will eventually fix?

Rhosts Authentication Problem on Solaris
Anyone, HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I currently installed openssh-2.9p2 on SunOS 5.7 and 5.8. From the very
moment that start to ssh out I get "Rhosts Authentication disabled ;the
originating ip will not be trusted". I 've put "Useprivileged yes " in the
ssh_config file, but then the ssh complains that there is a bad config line.
Can some one tell me what is going on and how can I

Suggestion: Man page clarification
scp, when copying directories with the "-r" flag, uses the same "trailing
slash" syntax as rsync, i.e., if a trailing slash is given on the source
directory, it will copy the contents of that directory to the destination,
instead of the directory itself.
rsync has a special section in the man page that points out that this is
actually expected behavior, it would be nice if

Descriptive Stats from Data Frame
I don't find how to do what I need to do in Dalgaard or 'R Cookbook', so
I'm asking here.
I have a data frame with water chemistry data and I want to start
exploring these data. There are three factors (site, date, chemical)
associated with each measurement. The data frame looks like this:
> summary(chemdata)
site_id.sample_date.param.quant

reading in time series
This is causing me great consternation, and I've spent too much time
floundering around on it.
My data is in the form of columns in Excel, with the first column being in
m/dd/yyyy hh:mm format. The spreadsheet is complicated (headers, merged
cells, lines w/o data); so I've tried various ways of exporting the data
into a text file for the R processing - CSV, spaced, etc. For example:

Scaffold generator: create vs. new
Can anyone supply me with a simple, succinct explanation of what the
difference is between the "new" controller and the "create" controller
that the scaffold generator produces?
I run:
> script/generate scaffold modelname controllername
And now I need to do some work inside the controllername.rb file. For
example, pulling a list from another database table to supply

Shop plugin?
I hope I''m not completely off-base here but is there a shop plugin for
ruby/rails that means I don''t have to write the code for a shop from
scratch? Can''t seem to find one...
Thanks!

OT : sensible analysis of censored rank data
This is more of a conceptual/methodological question than
"how to do it in R", so anyone who cares to reply might
want to do it off list.
I have censored rank order data .. electors have been asked
to rank the 4 most important issues out of a list of 20. For each
individual we therefore have a vector of 20 measurements 1..5,
where 1..4 are ranks and 5 = not ranked/less important than

savePlot error when type = "eps" or "wmf"
Hello,
When I use savePlot(filename="xy",type="eps") or

Error in grid.Call("L_textBounds", as.graphicsAnnot(x$label), x$x, x$y, :

This doesn't occur when I change the type to "jpeg" or "bmp". Can

IOWA & Mongrel, performance
So, after far too long, I''m running successful tests of an
IOWA/Mongrel integration.
This is using Mongrel 0.3.13.3.
I created an app that is the same as the one tested here:
http://blog.kovyrin.net/2006/08/28/ruby-performance-results/
Just running a single mongrel on an AMD Athlon (2 Ghz) dual processor
system with a Linux 2.4 kernel and Ruby 1.8.4 I get, with a

I've just posted an email to R-help with instructions on creating a
Firefox keyword search of the R documentation:

The method involves bookmarking the

up to only search help page titles:

adding sequences to postgresql DBMS via migration generator
Can somebody provide me with a code example of how to tell a migration
to add a sequence other than the default? I have been floundering
around with the books and online resources but cannot find a clear
example. I anticipate that some sort of option hash is invloved but I
cannot determin the correct syntax.
I imagine that it would go something like this:
...
t.column :my_sequence_name
