Problem booting from CF/SD cards and USB Flashdrives using syslinux
I've run into a rather odd problem. It seems that I can format and make bootable CF/SD cards and USB Flashdrives under Windows 98SE and MS-DOS 6.22 that will boot to a A: prompt on my system. But when I try making the same CF/SD cards and USB Flashdrives bootable under linux using syslinux I get nothing, not even a error message. It's like the syslinux bootloader doesn't even exist on the CF/SD...

Syslinux freezes my MP3 player/flashdrive, normal dos boot does not.
I recently got a cheap PenDrive iVO which I'll be the first to admit is anything but perfect, but, a pretty decent player considering it's cost is that of the other players with half the memory. One of the things I was looking forward to was having a great bootable flashdrive with my favorite linux rescue image and a few other diagnostic/repair things. Unfortunately, since I tried to put syslinux on there, it won't actually play MP3s anymore. Whenever it does anything where it's actually trying to read the filesystem, it just sort of freezes until I remove th...

Trying to figure out why my Cruzer Micro 512"MB" won't boot.
...ing to make do with two 256MB drives to hold all the data I neded since one drive couldn't hold enough (though I must admit my rescue disc type stuff takes up most of that space that made me need another flash drive to hold it all.) I really wanted to completely consolidate everything into one flashdrive and just sell the old drives or something. Unfortunately, it just doesn't seem to want to boot. I used the trick highlighted in the readme file on the fake USB-ZIP method because my bios is among those which can't boot a USB-HDD. This method has worked on my previous 256MB flashdrives a...

Bootable ISO with extra data outside the ISO?
Sorry if this is a total noob question... I've searched the archives and haven't turned up much. Not turning up much on the web in general, either. I'm working on a project and I'd like to create a Linux bootable ISO disc with an extra chunk of data **outside** the ISO space. This chunk of data might be a 10MB tar/zip. The goal would be to boot into Linux in RAM off the disc

Playing Gamemaker 6 and 7 games on OSX?
...ith gamemaker. I had a big game that I didn't finish on my old computer running Windows XP. But then my stupid sister dropped my laptop done the stairs. That was about 2 months ago, and I got a new laptop running OSX because my parents hate Windows (while I love it). I was looking through a flashdrive with my stuff from my old laptop on it and I found the game I was working on. I thought about using wine to run game maker so I could finish it. Once I had it up and I tried playing the part of my game I had finished I gave me this message: Runtime error 216 at 00431C61 And when I download oth...

Loading syslinux native from a USB HDD
Hi there guys! I want to set up Puppy-Linux to run off a 2GB USB key-drive in native mode (I.e. not as a virtual machine, which I'm finding runs too slow on my system, under XP.) To test it out, I want to run off a 150GB USB HDD. Now this drive is NTFS formatted and way bigger than the 1GB file structure limit that I read about in the Syslinux documentation. There's only one

What RH-like on a Dell XPS 15 (9590)?
...s not stable in the sense of strict ABI > compliance, although we try to minimize disruption within the 13-month > life of a release, but it is stable in the "does not crash" sense. Right, I'm currently digging that way, struggling a bit w/ the way I write the F26 ISO to a USB flashdrive (I'll succeed tomorrow, found better howtos to get rid of unetbootin issues). Fedora could be stable enough even if not a standard/reference in industry at all (which sticks to RH releases), I would have loved a CentOS because it is way more compliant to my "corporate" needs (LTS),...

bootloader installation improvements
I have some concerns about the Syslinux boot process, which I'm now investigating in connection with my work on booting Live-CD images from USB flashdrives. Some of these are related to what seems to be inadequate documentation, but I think that there are also aspects of Syslinux operation which could be fairly easily improved. quoting from the official documentation: Since version 5.00, when a SYSLINUX or EXTLINUX installer is used, the r...

boot thumbdrive with CentOS 7 ISO???
...nd talks about setting the BIOS to legacy mode, so that's the way I went. Centos 7 said nothing the contrary either... or doesn't say much otherwise. But so, yes, taking your advice: I reset all default BIOS settings to previously (UEFI enabled, Legacy disabled) and then accessing the flashdrive at the top of the list. However now booting again, the CentOS 7 menu items all lead to these errors: -------------- Image too small error: /images/pxeboot/vmlinuz has invalid signature error: you need to load the kernel first. Press 'e' to edit the selected line, or 'c' for a...
