automounted filesystem appears empty on first reference
...n automounted filesystem (when the mount is requested), it is empty; the second time it is not. Moreover, I only see this behavior on Centos 4.x systems, but not on Centos 5.0 systems going to the same fileserver. Here's an example, with some details simplified to clarify. In this example, fileserver1 is exporting fs1. centos4$ /bin/ls /mnt/fileserver1/fs1 # first time, directory looks empty centos4$ /bin/ls /mnt/fileserver1/fs1 # second time, I see the contents file1 dir2 I don't see this on Centos 5, which comes with a new (v5.x vs v4.x) version of automount:...

navigating to samba server by servername strangeness
hi everyone i am hoping for a bit of direction here, i've tried everything i can find that even closely relates to this. i have a samba server that has shares that can be accessed from windows by simply typing \\192.168.1.1 in windows file explorer, its name has just been changed to fileserver1 and is in dns as fileserver1. it is also in the dns as fserver1. before the name change everything was fine. the shares can be accessed from windows by typing \\fserver1 in windows file explorer, but since the name change when the new name is used, \\fileserver1 in windows file explorer, I am deni...

msdfs proxy and subfolders
...mmunity on this. My issue is that various SMB clients seem to behave differently when this parameter is pointed as a path that includes a sub-folder under the root share. So, given the following share configuration: [share1] comment = My DFS Proxy Share msdfs root = yes msdfs proxy = \fileserver1.example.com\shares\share1 I see the following behavior: * Windows: Windows clients accessing this \\dfsserver\share1 path see the intended destination - the contents of the \\fileserver1.example.com\shares\share1 folder. * smbclient (4.15.12): smbclient stops at the root share, so connecting to \\...

nmblookup failing
...#39;t get "net view \\<servername>" to work from my Windows test client. It fails with "The network path was not found". I followed some of the online debugging guides and have found that a couple of the test nmblookups on the server are failing. The server is named 'fileserver1' and its IP address is 155.2.196.251 for the purpose of this email. Here's some test results and my smb.conf follows. Thanks in advance for the help! * nslookup and ping work in both directions * #smbclient //fileserver/test -U<user> Password: Domain=[OUR_ADM] OS=[Unix] Server=[Samb...

Let's say our domain is called DOMAIN, and the root is called dfs. \\DOMAIN\dfs <file:///\\DOMAIN\dfs> is then mapped to an empty folder. >From there, we have many dfs links, such as: Users\testuser which is mapped in DFS to \\fileserver1\share\Users\testuser <file:///\\fileserver1\share\Users\testuser> , which works easily in windows to seamless take the user who access \\domain\dfs\users\testuser <file:///\\domain\dfs\users\testuser> to the folder \\fileserver1\share\users\testuser <file:///\\fileserver1\share\user...

id mapping on a dc+file server
Hi, I have a question again about my test environment. I have dc1, dc2, fileserver1, and dc3. dc3 is on an another site, and is functioning as fileserver too. As I read in the documentation, I cannot (shouldn't) use idmap config parameters in the smb.conf on my dc3. Unfortunately, first I copied that parameters too from fileserver1 (I use rid backend on fileserver1). So, I rem...

nfs4 problem in CENTOS6
Hi, This is slightly offtopic, but I have been trying to resolve that problem for two days now without much success. It looks like this may be something that works with CENTOS5, but not with CENTOS6! I have two machines, fileserver1 and server5. fileserver1 runs on CENTOS6 (virtualized, if this is important), server5 runs on Centos5. Both are running with the most recent updates. Server5 is a machine to store backups on. Several servers, including fileserver1, are mounted with nfs4 on server5. fileserver1 has this /etc/fstab...

Sharing passdb.tdb between two or more Samba servers?
...lients > and Xenservers for storage repositories are connecting to these > shares. > > What does that change for the Unix users as they have to be in the > passdb.tdb file anyway??? > > OK, you asked ;-) Lets say that windows user 'fred' wants to store something on fileserver1, then 'fred' must be a Samba user and a Unix user on fileserver1. If user 'fred' doesn't want to type in a password when they connect to fileserver1, then the Samba user 'fred' will have to have the same password, so you have two places to manage the users password if i...

Initial install - networking problem
Hi, I'm just installing Samba for the first time and have a problem with name resolution on my test client. Samba 3.0.8 is installed on a RHES system named 'fileserver1 (.our.xxx.edu)'. The clients are Windows 2000 and XP systems. This is a subnet that is part of a larger campus network. There is no Domain, just a workgroup called 'our_adm'. I have a very simple smb.conf file for testing. When I look at the client Network Neighborhood I can see 'fi...

Sharing passdb.tdb between two or more Samba servers?
Hello, We are using Samba only for file sharing. Because we are missing space in the first Samba server, we need to add a second Samba server. While building this new server i came up with the questioning about sharing the passdb.tdb file among different Samba servers? Would this be feasible? The idea is that all users should be able to access any file servers according with theirs needs. Or
