...ame. This option would only apply if there is one input. '-o' should also accept a "file name" of '-' (as in '-o-') to specify stdout. The default output when input is stdin should be stdout. I think this option would solve the four problems listed below. [sorta offtopic] Removing bad bytes from filenames
I'm moving my Ogg Vorbis collection off of my Linux server and onto my laptop. I plan on using iTunes to play my collection, but, that's a whole 'nother can of worms. I'm having trouble moving my complete collection over because dbPowerAmp (an application I used to love) made some dumb decisions about naming my files. For example, in track/album/artist names that contained a

opusenc constant quality setting
I'm a bit confused about VBR with Opus. I see that the default is VBR, but I don't see any way to specify a quality setting. I can set a target bitrate, but that's definitely not what I want; I want a constant quality level, like "-q" in oggenc, and for the encoder to select bitrates based on the desired quality. For example, for playback through earbuds or laptop

bitrtate peeling and lossless compression
I just read some of the discussion on the list about 'bitrate peeling' and remembered an interview of Monty that I have read recently. In it he says that Vorbis uses MCDTs <sp> and that these are theoretically reversable. And now, I learn that theoretically we can use bitrate peeling to make smaller files from larger ones, and that leads to my question. Could I theoretically

Rick, Mark asked "why" you want the least amount of compression. I think we still do not understand your goals. If you can give us a hint at what you're trying to accomplish in your search for the least amount of compression, that might help us find the right answer. ...uch better to change the format now than after 1.0. FLAC files from 0.4, 0.5, and 0.6 can't be uncompressed with the same program, so there's no reason to expect 0.8 and 0.9 or 0.9 and 1.0 to be compatible. However, all 1.x versions should have a compatible format. Now is the time. Larry Fenske

...y make good quality players (with a few software bugs, that they fix), with a good overall feature set. I like the G3 as a flash-based player because it uses a regular AA battery, supports rechargeable batteries, supports Ogg/Vorbis and MP3, the firmware is upgradeable, and it's small. - Larry Fenske > On Tuesday 26 June 2007, Rick wrote: > > are there any good (audio) quality portable flac players...? > > I haven't tried them, but from what I saw on the web pages, Cowan seems > to make some good ones in their iAudio line: > > http://www.cowonglobal.com/ > &g...

...compression" he means "compressed into least number of bytes"??? If that is the case, then he actually wants "best compression" (most compression) or "flac --best" and his question makes perfect sense. Rick, I hope this helps and does not cause offense. - Larry Fenske > Rick, > > Mark asked "why" you want the least amount of compression. I think > we still do not understand your goals. possible format change
After doing a lot of automated seek testing on files, it looks like the length of the sync code (currently 9 bits) is not long enough to enable a really robust AND efficient seek algorithm. Lengthening the sync code will require a format change (i.e. FLAC <0.8 streams won't play back on FLAC >0.9 decoders), so I'm sending this message out to see if there is any "NO DON'T DO
