Samba And Fedora Directory Server
Just curious, is anyone running Samba 3.x.x with LDAP using the
Fedora/Redhat Directory server as the LDAP backend?

smb/cifs share network speed testing
...g a Centos server with samba and Windows 2k3/8 servers on the
other end of a T1 connection and while I know the T1 bandwidth will be
the bandwidth limit, I want to see what happens when I have 1, 2, 3
clients just login in and begin doing file operations within a share.
Make sense?

Samba 4.0 alpha releases in production environments
...duction
environment and how is it working for you?
I run an environment of about 500+ Windows XP on a Netware environment
and have considerable Samba 3.0 experience, but I'd like to use GPO's to
control and clean up a lot of previous tech support problems.
Any thoughts?

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1
Hi,
a german IT news site [0] today posted that Amazon Linux AMI is based on
CentOS 5.5 -- is that true?
Maybe this would be stuff for the next newsletter... ;)
Cheers,

Repeat Review Request
Folks,
I like criticism! Please give me lots of it - particularly in respect of the
updated "Samba-Guide". It should now be up on the Samba mirror sites.
You can download it from:
http://www.samba.org/samba/docs/Samba-Guide.pdf
I have incorporated all feedback into this book. Did I get it right this time
or should I give up?
So far, not a word of feedback is deafening!

Where is the tdbsam password database file?
I'm curious to know where the tdbsam password database file is kept on
my Fedora 7 system. Using the unmodified smb.conf file that shipped
with Fedora 7, I've enabled users using smbpasswd, and successfully
accessed shares. I just can't figure out where the password database
is located:
[root@box ~]# service smb start
[root@box ~]# setsebool samba_enable_home_dirs on
[root@box ~]#

Samba server visibility
I must be missing something somewhere. I can't get our Samba server
to show up when I look in Network Neighborhood under XP. If I type in
\\servername\path, it won't find it, however if I use the IP, it works fine.
Now, experience tells me that I'm having to type the IP because it's
not resolving the name. Well fine, I can fix that, however I don't
recall doing that

iPod Touch/iPhone VPNs with CentOS.
I am looking at options for VPN connections from iPhones and iPod
Touches to CentOS systems. We use OpenVPN for connections with
Windows, Mac OS X, and other Linux systems, but there don't
appear to be any OpenVPN clients for iPhones (presumably because
there are no tun/tap interfaces available yet).
My experiences getting IPsec running on CentOS systems with OpenVPN
have not been pretty.

Profile Location Best Practice
I have a question about using roaming profiles in a Samba PDC controlled
domain. I know that with Windows 95 and that generation or so, the
profile had to be stored in the same directory as the home folder.
("/sambahomes/john/profile" for example.) You didn't have a choice
because of technical reasons. But that restriction no longer applies
with modern versions of Windows,

upgrading from 3.0.13 to 3.0.23
Hi all
I just downloaded the latest sable rlease (3.0.23b). I compiled it and
installed it without any problems.
When I restart servers, shares configured like this :
[xdavid]
read list = user
browseable = no
path = /home/users/xdavid
write list = xdavid
only user = yes
user = xdavid
works fine, but these shares (using goups names) doesn't

Difficulty converting from RH 7.3 to Debian Sarge
I am running debian sarge 2.4.27-3-686 and samba version 3.0.14a-Debian
. The previous machine was running rh 7.3 (valhalla) 2.4.20-29.7.progeny.11, samba version unknown. I have restored all shares and directories. Most of users can access everything, however our login script will not run. For those users that cannot log in re-joining them to the domain not only works but then the login

Samba 3.0.25b: smbd 99% CPU utilisation with opened MS Word doc
Hi I'm trying to upgrade from Samba 3.0.23c on FC4 to 3.0.25b from Samba
sources.
Everything appears to function correctly until an MS word document is
opened from a share - the file opens but the smbd process in question
rockets to 99%+ CPU, stays there & needs kill -9'ing to stop it. This
happens reliably.
I have an appropriate strace & a level 7 log but can't see anything

Dual ethernet server on the same LAN
Hello,
I have Fedora Core 3 linux and Samba 3.0.14a on a server that has 2
ethernet interfaces connected to the same LAN. The purpose to have such
a server with 2 network cards is to serve 2 network shares with high
traffic. I want the first share to be accessed trough the first network
card (named drone.domain.com) and the second share trough the second
card (named probe.domain.com). My DNS

incompatibility between roaming profiles and winxp clients that didn't create them
[samba v3.0.24, gentoo w/ kernel 2.6.15]
I'm hoping someone has some insight into the following problem that I've
recently encountered:
Basically, winxp seems to be creating roaming profiles that are
incompatible with another winxp client. I've got two sets of winxp
clients, which I'll call 'new' and 'old'. Profiles created (and
perfectly usable) by the old

Replace NT 4.0 with Samba PDC but keep PC WINS *Advice*
I am in the process of researching and testing SAMBA as a PDC.
The only thing I am uncertain about is that our billing scheduling system is running WINS and our 110 pc's are configured to use it for wins resolution. I would like to leave WINS on that system but can it coexist with a SAMBA server acting as PDC
but not doing WINS?
I will be replacing an NT 4.0 PDC which has operated with
