...copyright law applies to since it is really
copyright law that restricts distribution and the GPL simply provides
the exceptions. There's a valid case for linked components to be
considered derivative works of each other if they require the other
for the work as a whole to be functional.

...parts in th GPL that read similar to: "under the terms and
conditions of paragraph xxx". And these parts just require you to follow the
rules in the named part of the GPL but not to more! These parts apply to what
the GPL addresses when speaking about the "complete source".
Fazit: The GPL does not require you to put everything under GPL. It just
requires you to include makefiles, scripts and libraries under any license that
permits redistribution.

xorriso or genisoimage syntax assistance
I got this figured out much faster than I thought I would. Thanks to all of
your help, Peter, Mattias, Thomas and Helmut. And Thomas, that 8 partition
live OS sounds right up my alley, and I will definitely check it out.
The second partition is working well with `parted' and `fdisk', so I am
quite pleased. Below is, again, "what I came up with". I tried to integrate
each of your
