SECURITY: passwd problem (second edition)
...ns. I found a bug in cracklib which can cause passwd to perform accesses to random addresses in the task memory. This potentially can cause a security problem (and passwd of course doesn''t change password after performing random accesses). The quick fix of the problem is disable ''fascist'' mode of pam_unix_passwd module in pam.conf. The patch below should be by applied to cracklib then cracklib should be rebuild, reinstalled and then pam_unix_passwd should be rebuilded. Andrey V. Include for sshd_config
...to get in to fix it. You'd have to *stage* the deployment, first into a test environment against which you can run "sshd -t", and then deploy them robustly and without dangling bits to be sure that the test environment correlated well to the production enviornment. But that's for fascist control in environments where you can't get hands and eyes at the keyboard on the local system, and especially if you're getting complex with your "include" files.

Mode of ~/.ssh (Darwin bug #2575103)
...uire a security token of some sort instead of blindly trusting the client machine to authenticate users. This is a drag. Also, since your public key live in ~/.ssh, it seems unfortunate that other users can no longer get to it. Minor drag. I'm wondering why it was deemed necessary to be fascist with the directory rather than selectively fascist about the files in it. -Fred Wilfredo S?nchez, wsanchez at apple.com Open Source Engineering Lead Apple Computer, Inc., Core Operating System Group 1 Infinite Loop, Cupertino, CA 94086, 408.974-5174

CentOS - Firefox and Flash
...Unfortunately we work in a regulatory regime that requires constant updating and the government contractors providing the updates tend to use Flash as their preferred platform, albeit not on YouTube so the html5 setting is not available in those cases. So, I need some way of overriding this 'fascist nannyism'. Is there a way to stop FF blocking Flash or do I revert to older versions of FF to regain the functionality? I am fairly confident that Canadian Government is not going to pay to have this material redone in OGG/OGV/OGX. -- *** E-Mail is NOT a SECURE channel **...

For those who don't know, Greg Houlette sent in a request from an address that doesn't conveniently accept replies. If people can't be bothered to read our replies, we shouldn't be bothered by their requests. Just a note. Maybe a request for a killfile. --Dan

[LLVMdev] Work in progress patch to speed up andersen's implementation
...before using any obstack macros. Each independent stack is represented by a `struct obstack'. Each of the obstack macros expects a pointer to such a structure as the first argument. One motivation for this package is the problem of growing char strings in symbol tables. Unless you are "fascist pig with a read-only mind" --Gosper's immortal quote from HAKMEM item 154, out of context--you would not like to put any arbitrary upper limit on the length of your symbols. In practice this often means you will build many short symbols and a few long symbols. At the time you are reading...

Failure to Launch (was override -q option)
Attached is the very verbose ssh output. Just to be perverse, this time two nodes lost connectivity. The only thing I see is lines saying that the two connections are lost, although being honest I have no idea what everything else means. For reference, 8 ssh cinnections were being made at the same time for a 8x8mpi task. N.B., since the OS I am using does not have rsh, I am currently using the
