Hello R users I recently learned how to use this command: lapply(datum,"[[","ColumnName") Unfortunately, I don't know how exactly it works, what it's called (in particular the "[[" part], and what other things you can do with it (retrieve multiple columns?). Given datum is a list of dataframes with the same column, but different number of rows,

Functions on matrix row level
Hi together, I have some data in a matrix structure - say 1000 rows with 10 columns. And I like to do some calculations (like max, avg or min) on row level. The only solution I found so fare was using a loop like for (i in 1:1000) { max[i] <- max(matrix[I,]) } It looks like that this is not very fast. Does an other way exists? Kind regards Ulrich

InfoWeek Article on VOIP
Here's t link: http://www.informationweek.com/story/showArticle.jhtml;jsessionid=JUEFVG ENEA01YQSNDBCCKH0CJUMEKJVN?articleID=165702588 The bottom line is that they compare retail VOIP providers like Comcast Cable, Time-Warner Cable, AT&T, Vonage, Packet8 et al. Their methodology seems sound. Their conclusion is that retail VOIP services don't yet match the PSTN for reliability &

speech in vorbis
I was wondering how vorbis fares as a speech codec? I mean can it give similar or better quality as GSM/Toast at the same kind of bitrates/filesize? I'm not worried about streaming but I'd love to be able to create really small voice files. Can anyone give me an idea of filesize for recording time for pure speech based u...

KVM HA
Hi, I have two KVM hosts (CentOS 7) and would like them to operate as High Availability servers, automatically migrating guests when one of the hosts goes down. My question is: Is this even possible? All the documentation for HA that I've found appears to not do this. Am I missing something? My configuration so fare includes: * SAN Storage Volumes for raw device mappings for guest vms

New to Gluster. Question about Postgres on Gluster.
...policies are next to non-existent and if it all falls apart, I get to pick up the pieces and try to put them back together. I'm trying to get a requisition through finance at the moment for additional hardware. Anyway, we are running postgres for our databases. I was wondering how well gluster fares with DB's? Drawbacks? Recommendations? I'll be putting up and running a few VM's with gluster and run some tests to simulate the typical workload for a day. It's usually more writes through the day with sporadic reads when reports are generated. I've gone through the docs on th...

Global removal pass - potential for improvement?
Hey everyone, I was looking into how the global optimization pass fares against things like what's reported in https://bugs.llvm.org/show_bug.cgi?id=44676 Looking at this, I think it would be pretty trivial to optimize that down given that there are already threading assumptions made: https://godbolt.org/z/u6ZqoB Is this something I can look into? Another thing is...

Windows access problems
Hello, I had the pleasure of installing a new Linux(RH8.0)/Samba(2.2.7a) server (as a PDC) at one of our locations this week. They previously were accessing a shared drive from a Win2k Pro. machine. The migration did not go very smooth. Most things have been resolved, but we have some strange issues that are still causing problems, which I was hoping someone out there would have some insight

Asterisk on a dialup connection?
How will this fare? I am planning on putting an asterisk box for my brother in the Philippines but they only have dialup internet. I want them to be able to use a telephone set on a phonejack or linejack card and call me and vice versa via VOIP. My setup in the US is working already with a broadband cable connection. I am thinking that dialup may not work because of the bandwidth required
