errors in rsync
...and got error in some /var/log files. Errors listed below. When I cat /var/log/dpkg.log it stops and aborts in the middle before getting to the last parts where I used apt-get to load a lot of packages. This is serious. cat /var/log/fontconfig.log doesn't even start. cat fontconfig.log, faillog and lastlog do not even start and give the messages like: cat: faillog: Input/output error What can I do to find out if the disk is bad or repair it? Are these errors serious enough to re-install? Larry Alkoff The entries in /var/log/rback.errors: root@kinda log # cat rback.errors rsync error:...

CentOS 5 - locking out users afer 3 failed attempts
Hi I am trying to lock users after 3 attempts and then set the timeout before they can log in again. I thought i could achieve this with auth required pam_tally.so deny=3 unlock_time=600 in /etc/pam.d/system-auth but it seems to not be the case - I cant find a working config for this anywhere and i wonder if anyone has one they can share? thanks

pam_tally question
...th-ipaddr-display and i do have "UsePAM yes" set in sshd_config. i've tried and failed to get it to work with 3.7.1p2 and 3.8.1p1. i've tried compiling them both --with-pam and --without-pam and tried both "UsePAM yes" and "UsePAM no" all to no avail. /var/log/faillog exists and it is owned by root and set to 600. these are redhat 7.3 and 9 systems. it displays the same behavior on both. any thoughts? <EOF> ::[ RFC 2795 ]:: "Democracy means simply the bludgeoning of the people by the people for the people." -Oscar Wilde

Freebsd auto locking users
Dear FreeBsd gurus, I have a problem concerning users password and authentication policies. The goal is 1)make freebsd to lock users after 3 unsuccessful login attempts, 2)force users to change their passwords every 90 days I've done such changes in Linux distros, with various PAM modules. But in Freebsd it seems that i need to use login.conf file. Here I made necessary changes in that

Lost root access
So on a virtual server the root password was no longer working (as in I couldn't ssh in anymore). Only I and one other know it and neither of us have changed it. No other account had the correct privileges to correct this so I'm wondering, if I had mounted that vdi as a secondary device on another VM, browsed the file system and delete /etc/shadow would this have wiped all users passwords

How to install programs in wine?
I am a rank newbie to Linux and wine. I am running Ubuntu Dapper on an AMD 1800 mhz machine, wine 0.9.15 Everything I have read says use the installer to load windows programs. Where is the installer? Thanks, -- Ron Thompson On the Beautiful Florida Space Coast, right beside the Kennedy Space Center, USA http://www.plansandprojects.com My hobby pages are here:
