Whine in dual core Windows PC if R uses full CPU capacity
Dear R-developers, the following may seem a weird question for R-devel – I try anyway, because it does seem to be related to usage of R and R's way of interacting with the hardware. When running R (2.4.0) on my new dual core Windows XP system (Intel Core 2 Duo E6600, Mainboard ASUS P5B, BeQuiet Power Unit), I observe various types of sounds (not related to fans) when running at full

Masked help page
Hi list, not really a problem to solve but a strange unwanted behavior (at least I do not like it): I'm loading library(multiv) to use sammon. Later I load library(MASS) which tells me that sammon is masked now, because there is also a MASS version of sammon. Since I believe that the MASS version is at least as good as the multiv version, I would also use the MASS version, but help(sammon)

using browser() in complex programs - where am I?
Dear all, is there an easy way to know at which position in the source code browser() (or stop()) was called? This seems to be important for me when I try to debug a program (e.g. using options(error=quote(dump.frames()))) traceback() returns some information, but I miss something like a line number, e.g. "stopped at line 999 in foo.R". How to draw a tree?
Hi, I have run rpart to construct a regression tree. Is there any simple method to draw a nice picture of it, as it is usually done in books and paper to visualize the tree? How to z-standardize for subgroups?
Hi folks, I have a dataframe df.vars with the follwing structure: var1 var2 var3 group Group is a factor. Now I want to standardize the vars 1-3 (actually - there are many more) by class, so I define z.mean.sd <- function(data){ return.values <- (data - mean(data)) / (sd(data)) return(return.values) } now I can call for each var z.var1 <- by(df.vars$var1, group,

I haven't seen this idea and you've wrote nothing about the ^M: The ^M means that there is a "\015" / \r at the end of the output. Where does this char come from? In "normal" output, this char is almost invisible, esp. at the end of a line. I don&...

Scoping rule problem -- solved
Thanks to some comments from Brian D. Ripley, I found my error: I should not have given a data argument to lm() after creating a formula-object. This obviously confused things... Thanks again, I've really learnt again a bit more on R-programming... Cheers, Winfried --------------------------------------------------------------------- E-Mail: Winfried Theis <theis at

svm
Hello list, I want to apply svm from library e1071, and I want to supply class weights. I do not really understand the help entry (and there is no example) class.weights: a named vector of weights for the different classes, used for asymetric class sizes. Not all factor levels have to be supplied (default weight: 1). All components have to be named. I have two

Goodness of fit test for estimated distribution
Hi, is there any method for goodness of fit testing of an (as general as possible) univariate distribution with parameters estimated, for normal, exponential, gamma distributions, say (e.g. the corrected p-values for the Kolmogorov-Smirnov or Chi-squared with corresponding ML estimation method)? It seems that neither ks.test nor chisq.test handle estimated parameters. I am aware of function

add'l info: x86_64 reproducible server PANIC with latest kernel
I forgot to mention that the problem has nothing to do with the kernel being tainted (due to VMware server). I installed VMware server after being faced with the crashes, to give the Java user a "sandbox" which s/he could crash without taking down the real server. Only then I discovered that VMware server has a memory limitation to 3600MB (I guess because it's not a 64bit

Evidence Theory in R
Hello, well, I searched list-archive, cran and the references, but found nothing. Thus: Does anybody around here know anything about Dempster-Shafer Theory, Evidence Theory or Hints in R? Has anybody stumbled about a package that I overlooked or implemented something in this area? I really would like to not implement a hint-model a second time. My apologies if I missed something obvious, but I
