The dangers of static buffers in rsync code
I have been trying for quite a while now to understand why is the flist.c:f_name() function implemented using static buffers. Anyone care to comment? The immediate problem is that any call to f_name overrides the previous content (well, obvious). This, combined with the fact that several function calls are made with the result of f_name(file) results in problems handling hardlinks - and

rsync-3.0.3 crashes with protection exception
Hi, I'm new to rsync and currently installing rsync-3.0.3 to a OS/390 Unix System Services environment. The build process runs fine and does not produce errors. But if I test the program, it crashes everytime with a protection exception. rsync-2.6.9 was running fine! I can't figure out why exactly it crashes. I hope that someone on this list can give me a hint on that. This is the debug

Rails hates my recursive function
I''m trying to create a function that will take input in the form "a12345678" and output text in the form "a12-34-5678" if and only if the input text is * not* in the form "adam smith" The goal is to allow my users to enter either names separated by a space, or the student id number into a single search field and have the results be returned based on the

PATCH: option to ignore case in filenames
I have two DOS filesystems mounted on Linux as "vfat" which I want to rsync. (They are on flash cards, so that they are also small). rsync gets tricked because the filesystem treats names differing in only case as the same. Thus, when it tries to sync "FOO123" with "foO123", it copies over the "new" file, and then renames it over the old one (which it

rsync bug in clean_flist() while removing duplicted names
hello, i use rsync as a major backend for our automatic debian GNU/linux workstation synchronisation project at the Free University of Berlin / Computer Science. my concept is, that rsync gets the class, group and machine-specific root-trees as argument, and it's up to him to find and automaticaly remove duplicated files on the basis of the priority (which is actually the argument list).

[Slightly OT] Need Query Help
I need to select 1 record from each client. This record has the charge with the most severe charge type (lowest charge_type_id). How do I go about this? I have been using a find_by_sql query out of the client.rb that looks like: SELECT c.f_name AS f_name, c.l_name AS l_name, c.gender AS gender, c.race AS race, c.dob AS dob, c.address AS address, c.city AS city, c.state AS

rsync 2.6.1cvs dumps core when preserve_hard_links and backup
I tried rsync 2.6.1cvs on my FreeBSD 4.X boxes. It dumps core when preserve_hard_links and backup. And SUPPORT_HARD_LINKS is true. rsync -avH --delete --backup --backup-dir=/some/backup/dir \ srchost::dir/ dir/ The core says... ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Program terminated with signal 11, Segmentation fault. #0 0x80536c0 in keep_backup

scan for first existing hard-link file
Here's a patch that makes rsync try to find an existing file in a group of hard-linked files so that it doesn't create the first one in the group from scratch if a later file could be used instead. Details: I decided to avoid having the code do an extra scan down the list when we encounter the lead file in the list. This is because it would be bad to have to do the same scan in the

Upload Progress Bar Problems
I''m writing an application where the user will be uploading many images and user feedback is essential. I''ve been trying to get the upload progress bar plug-in to work, but thus far have not had any success. I''ve downloaded Sean Treadway''s application code from his site http://sean.treadway.info/demo/upload/ and I followed the steps in his Upload

patches for copying atimes
Hi. Here's a patch for copying the atimes of files when -t/--times is given. I bumped the protocol to 29 since it sends more data over the wire. It obviously does not send the atime if it's sending data to an older rsync version. It passes all the tests (including the added atime.test) for me on a: Linux Debian/3.0 gcc 2.95.4 (debian), glibc 2.2.5 system. Any questions/feedback? I

HFS+ resource forks: WIP patch included
As you all know, rsync doesn't have any special handling for Mac OS X HFS+ resource forks. Kevin Boyd made RsyncX and rsync_hfs, to address this gap, but they only work when the destination filesystem is also HFS+. I haven't been able to find any references to an rsync that is capable of syncing from HFS+ to UFS (etc). The only solutions I've seen involve lots of preprocessing

[PATCH] add option to skip files based on age/mtime
I've added the options --min-age=SECONDS and --max-age=SECONDS to allow rsync to skip files based on how recently they were modified. Setting --min-age=30 (for example) would cause rsync to skip files that had been modified within the last 30 seconds. Setting --max-age=7776000 would cause rsync to skip files that had been modified more than 90 days ago (7776000 == 60*60*24*90). I realize

new option suggestion '--backup-only'
Hi, How about adding now option '--backup-only' that means making backups only and don't change any destination files? (I posted similar patch a month ago, but the patch was made for nightly snapshot of 20020808, which was tooo old! Laugh at me...) I want to use rsync with LVM snapshot to make incremental backups like below: 1) Make LVM snapshot of file system and mount it.

patch: typo's and gcc warnings
Two patches: one to correct the spelling of permissions (in comments, but such typos disturb me as well), and one to cast inode and dev to unsigned long before comparing, to prevent gcc giving a warning "comparison between signed and unsigned". [PATCH] Limit recursion depth
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hy folks, everybody knows, that rsync eats up a lot of memory, when rsyncing a lot of files. To avoid this i run rsync on different parts of the directory-tree (e.g. first ~muchofileuser/muchofilesdir1 then ~muchofileuser/muchofilesdir2 and so on) and it works fine for me. So i tried to do this in a automatical way (e.g perl/shell/whatever

improved atime patch
I posted a patch a few days ago that adds copying of atime. At that time, it was just enabled with -t/--times. After some time, we have figured out that that choice might not have been the best. Here's a new version of the patch (relative to CVS) that adds -A/--copy-atime instead. It also includes a test case. Any feedback on this patch and/or the previous one that I posted?

[RFC] protocol version
I'm in the midst of coding a patch set for consideration that will bump the protocol version and have a couple of observations. The current minimum backwards-compatible protocol is 15 but we have code that checks for protocol versions as old as 12. If someone else doesn't beat me to it i'm considering cleaning out the pre-15 compatibility code. A backwards compatibility patch could

patch to rsync to add options for pre- and post-transfer commands
In case others find this of value, I wrote a patch to rsync 2.5.6 to give rsync in --daemon mode the ability to run a pre-transfer and post-transfer command. These options handle our need to prepare a server to receive files and to do some processing after receiving files. The options for /etc/rsyncd.conf are pretransfer script = /some/command/to/run posttransfer script =
