Nice little performance improvement
Hi,
In my situation I'm using rsync to backup a server with (currently) about 570,000 files.
These are all little files and maybe .1% of them change or new ones are added in
any 15 minute period.
I've split the main tree up so rsync can run on sub sub directories of the main tree.
It does each of these sub sub directories sequentially. I would have liked to run
some of these in

Avoiding multiple outputs using RODBC package
...table of all the variable
combinations that are saved at the start, and then simply avoid computing
and re-outputing those results. However, my results database table
currently has over 200K rows (and will grow very quickly as I keep going
with this project), so I think that would not be the most expeditious answer
as I think just the SQL query to download 200K rows x 10+ columns is going
to be time consuming in and of itself.
I know this is kindof a weird problem, and am open to all sorts of ideas...
Thanks!

samba-3 problem joining ws to domain
Howdi,
I can't add a w2k workstation to samba3 domain with my username. If I add my
username to "admin users" list, then I can add the box to domain (but
overritten by euid). My goal is, that joining domain can be done without
using "admin users" option.
Groupmapping is done and works. When machine is in domain and log in, I get
full admin rights on that box. Removing the

How to specify search order for require()
In a .First.lib I want to issue two require()s to insure that two other packages are loaded. But I want the package being loaded by .First.lib using library.dynam("mypackage",pkb, lib) to be higher in the search order than the two required packages, because I want to have a couple of functions from the two required packages overridden. What is the best way to do that? Thanks in advance

mirroring without a network
Hi,
this might be offtopic - please excuse if it turns out to be.
I have rather big ( > 20 Gb) source archives on two different machines.
Unfortunately there is only a very slow network connection between these
machines.
To synchronize these two archives (directory trees), I'd like to
generate a directory tree of signature files (instead of the real ones).
Then I would copy only these to

OS instance, with iptables firewalling of its own. Two outcomes are
wanted...1. in case of a compromise of a server through any of the services,
the penetration is limited to that instance of the OS/Service and 2. I want
to put another server on the same subnet in the DMZ and want to implement an
expeditious failover using rsync (not instantaneous...as I don''t think I
have the either the budget or the expertise to do that...or maybe I am just
plain scared to attempt it).
Later, I want to do the same to services on the LAN.
My questions are:
1. Is Xen virtualization good from the point of s...

If the FAQ is well maintained, organized, supported by appropriate

via a quick inclusion of a URL, to expeditiously answer some of the oft
seen issues.
However, this is an isolated stab at a larger problem, IMO. The number
of informative articles on the wiki can be expected to continue to grow.
There are also many links in the list archives that reference outside
