The phones have four options for each button: Speed dial (doesn't light up the LED at all), "Asterisk BLF" (which shows the status of the hints in the dialplan), "Presence Watcher" (I have no idea what this does) and "Eventlist BLF" (I don't really know what this is, but it seems to be related RFC 4662, which does not seem to be implemented in Asterisk). I tested your fix (newhidups -DDD /dev/null) using both and APC Back-UPS 350 an APC Smart-UPS RT 2000 XL.
