Why we don't have eternal optimizers?
...programs, the period that starts
when the program
starts being developed to the day it is released is way bigger than a
couple of minutes.
In the meantime, a couple of modules might not have been touched for months.
And an unconstrained optimizer could do its best in all this time.
Given that this eternal optimizer will respect the initial semantics, one
can compile
a module, test it, and then let the optimizer do its best. The behavior of
a module should
only be faster, no need to re-test.
In the meantime of course, we need to test the program as a whole and other
modules
might actually change. Fo...

King's Quest: Mask of Eternity cannot load saved games.
so after a lot of wasted time and stuff, I finally got mask of eternity working on my desktop with arch linux. everything seems to be working fine, except I can't change the graphics mode to direct3d (I don't care about that though) and more importantly, I can't load saved games. this game is huge and there is no way to beat it in one sitting, so that is a huge problem. I was going

Aselia the Eternal crash
At first glance, the game ran fine with winetricks mfc42
However an hour into the game it crashes (consistently) immediately following the closing of a certain scene.
I've put up the console output HERE (http://pastebin.com/U3vzBKJW). This shows up the moment of the crash, with a crashdialog.
I'm on Linux Mint 11 32bit using WINE 1.3.35
Any ideas what's wrong?

DID + 800 Providers
Hello,
I'm looking for US DID and US50/CA 800# Providers.
I found voiceconduits.com 8 month ago, there interface looks good, but
there are still not live, I believe they won't be any time soon.
I found sixtel, but order take eternities, they probably won't get my
orders right any soon.
So i'm looking for a good provider for DIDs and 800# from the US and CA,

Using tincd 1.0.7, if I send a SIGALRM to tincd when a host is

Recommendations for eternally-running backgroundrb workers?
I''ve got some workers that I want to have running all the time. Right
now I''m just launching them manually, by requesting a special page in
my rails app that includes lines like:
MiddleMan.new_worker(:class=> :receiver, :job_key=>:r,
:args=>{:sleep_time=>10})
This strikes me as a really weak way to fire up my workers. I
basically want to automate things so

How to organize/develop an R function
Hi
Maybe this is not an issue about R. It's probably a programming issue
and I am not a developer at all. Anyway my main developing activities
are in R and that's where I have difficulties.
When I develop a function or group of functions I lose eternities with
the objects attributes and classes. I do a lot of object manipulation
(lists to arrays, factors to numeric vectors, etc, etc) so

FSCK
Hello
I have a newbie question, given a centos 5 installation,
An 5 very large disk arrays ( 2.5Tbytes each ) -
Is there a way to suspend or stop the fsck during the boot up?
The system seems to pick the most inopportune time to decide to reach
the check count limit... and with this many disks, a reboot takes
several hours... which is an eternity when your boss is looking over
your shoulders

Small Rcmdr issue
Just installed Rcmdr on a Linux box.
When I exit from both Rcmdr and R together from the regular Rcmdr exit menu,
it leaves my xterm with "stty -echo", so that nothing that is typed appears.
If I exit only Rcmdr, and then exit R normally, everything is okay (stty echo).
Other than that minor irritant, everything seems to work just fine.

Best way to Upgrade Samba 3.014a
Hello,
I have Samba 3.014a-Debian in a server Debian 3.1 Release 1 Sarge. The
performance is pretty poor.
My LAN is running at 100mbits/sec. So even at 4 feet from the server I'm
getting slow responses on my windoze 2000 pro computer from samba. It takes
an eternity to copy files from one place to the other. Also, I have
several error messages and files corruption.
Could anybody tell me

The R Inferno
"The R Inferno" is now on the Burns Statistics website at
http://www.burns-stat.com/pages/Tutor/R_inferno.pdf
Abstract: If you are using R and you think you're in hell,
this is a map for you.
Also, I've expanded the outline concerning R on the
Burns Statistics 'Links' page. Suggestions (off-list) for
additional items are encouraged.
