The error message on the SPARCprinter was
Error: /invalidfont
Command: 'definefont'
Ostack: /Font5 /Font5 font(Symbol,1)

This was a picture with no Symbol font involved, so I was able to
comment out the following line:
%/Font5 /Symbol findfont definefont
and then the PostScript worked under xdvi and on the SPARCprinter.
