Can SAMBA be useful for me ?
I am planning to set up a small compute farm consisting of x86 notebooks on a switched ethernet lan. These only have one nic and limited disk, so that I need to import a data partition from an external file server. For this purpose I'd like to use a w98 PC that has access to internet over dsl. I envisage connecting all machines to the ethernet switch using 10/100 links. The ip addresses would

how to calculate the mean of a group in a table
Hi its me again I don't mean to get on your nerves, but the use of R proofs to be a bit more complicated than envisaged. I would like to calculate the mean of a group of values, here "wage_accepted". The group is determined by the stage and period, so in the end there should be a column with the values of the wages in period 1 stage1, period 1 stage 2, period 2 stage1...

Finding pairs
Dear R Helpers, I am a newbie and recently got introduced to R. I have a large database containing the names of bank branch offices along-with other details. I am into Operational Risk as envisaged by BASEL II Accord.  I am trying to express my problem and I am using only an indicative data which comes in coded format. Implementation of W2K Group Policies from a Linux Server
I am an evil M$ MCSE :), who of late is planning on opening his own business... Due to the large cost involved with setting up Win2K server, both Hardware and OS, we are considering a Linux server setup. We have SOME experience with Linux, but were after information specifically on the possible implementation of Win2K Group Policies (as well as 'Domain' Authentication_ for the client

"logistic" + "neg binomial" + ...
Hi Folks, I've just come across a kind of problem which leads me to wonder how to approach it in R. Basically, each a set of items is subjected to a series of "impacts" until it eventually "fails". The "force" of each impact would depend on covariates X,Y say; but as a result of preceding impacts an item would be expected to have a "cumulative

[LLVMdev] New kind of metadata to capture LLVM IR linking structure
Hi David Thanks for your email. What's the benefit/purpose of the MDLLVMModule over just having the > MDCompileUnits themselves? Best way to structure this?
I''m thinking of an application in which a user can request for different items (like office stationery). So, I have a table of users and a table of requests. The thing is that depending on the item requested, the parameters are different - for example, pens may have {colour, width, type} while paper may have parameters such as {colour, size (A4, letter, legal), stack size,

Asterisk as SIP/H.323 Signalling Gateway
Hi, I am wondering whether I can use Asterisk as SIP/H.323 Signalling Gateway. The setup I envisage looks as follows: H.323 end-point ---------(ETH)--------- Asterisk ---------(ETH)--------- SIP Proxy/Registrar ---------(ETH)--------- SIP end-point (ETH: Ethernet) In principle, Asterisk would just be used to integrate H.323 end-points into a fully SIP-based core-network. Hence, there

Clustering Meetme over multiple boxes?
Has anyone here done any work on clustering Meetme conferences over multiple Asterisk boxes? The scenario I am thinking of is where there are two or more boxes connected to a set of PRIs that all answer to the same PSTN number, and where it's not possible to know in advance on which box a call would arrive. So it would be possible to have some calls on one box and some on another, that should

yum upgrading
I have boxes on CentOS 4.2 that I want to move to CentOS5. Are there any problems envisaged in trying to move 4.2->4.3, 4.3->4.4 and 4.4->5.0, using yum upgrade and changing the repositories at each stage? I guess it is not too good an idea to try it in one step. Or do I need the CDs? Can anyone advise? TIA Best wishes John John Logsdon "Try to

Writing my first CRAN vignette
...ation? 2 - If I use a package from CTAN would that be considered within the spirit if not the letter of open source? I am not asking for trained legal advice here, it is the spirit of the rules. 3 - I assume including the .bbl file would be fine rather than making a separate .bib file? I am not envisaging doing anything complex: text, formulae, some tables and one figure plus a few references. Michael Dewey info at aghmed.fsnet.co.uk http://www.aghmed.fsnet.co.uk/home.html

multiple users - auth'd source?
Hi, I am trying to bring up an Icecast service for users of a free & paid subscription system. Paid users can source a stream. Free signups can listen (auth) to the paid user's streams. My user data is in LDAP mainly, but I have a URI that returns "icecast-auth-user: 1" when passed the user= and pass= variables on the HTTP GET. AFAICT - the source password has to be

Inflate/Expand/Resize an array
Gudday, I've had a good look everywhere trying to figure out how to do this, but I'm afraid I can seem to find an answer anywhere - maybe its because I'm not using the right terms, or maybe its because I'm a dummy. But unfortunately, I am not completely and utterly stuck. Here's the problem: I have two large, six dimensional arrays that I would like to add together. Lets call

Problem using model.frame with argument subset in own function
Dear List, I am writing a formula method for a function in a package I maintain. I want the method to return a data.frame that potentially only contains some of the variables in 'data', as specified by the formula. The problem I am having is in writing the function and wrapping it around model.frame. Consider the following data frame: dat <- data.frame(A = runif(10), B = runif(10), C

source questions & intentions to patch: yp-timing & auth
Good Day, Looking at the SVN repo: there's 30+ commits since the 2.6.2 release; the last one from August 2009. Are there any intentions to roll a release anytime soon? Are there any more recent branches? I'm currently looking into extending icecast2 (more below) and am wondering if I should base the patches on 2.6.2+debian-fixes or work from svn-trunk? We are using a cluster of icecast

best centos server setup for graphics intensive kvm vms?
Hallo list I've been running fedora for donks as my production laptop os, but now I want to set up one of those old laptops to run as a home server running a number of home type vm appliances. I don't want to risk having to tear down and rebuild the setup every 6 months to a year - so, figure centos is my best canditate to run as a stable server. The sort of home type vms I envisage

playlist streams
Hello again No replies regarding memory requirements! I have an idea to provide 1000's of streams without the requirement of 100's of source PC's, and perhaps without even requiring Icecast at all. But I'm not sure if this will work. We will have thousands of 24 hour playlists generated everyday by software I'm developing. If we encode all our audio files at 32kb/s, could
