Voice activity detection
...o the VAD? In mine, if I detect voice any time between now and say a quarter second later, I start sending, and then I wait a half second or whatever after I stop detecting. You pretty much have to have this, or people start getting anxious talking over an internet stream. They have to enunciate expressions like "ya probably" because the ya isn't detected, only the probably. By sending a bit of padding around the detection, it also prevents the detector from dropping out mid-sentence. It takes it from being a screaming contest over a walkie talkie, to a normal te...

For a piece of classical music, much more is...

Voice activity detection
This must be a simple issue, but I cannot figure it out. I want to use VAD, but I don't know how to check if the actual frame has voice in it or not. So, in my code, I do: int tmp = 1; speex_preprocess_ctl(preprocess_state, SPEEX_PREPROCESS_SET_VAD, &tmp); speex_preprocess_ctl(preprocess_state, SPEEX_PREPROCESS_SET_DENOISE, &tmp); then later, for each frame

[OT] "normal" (as in "Guassian")
Hi Folks, Apologies to anyone who'd prefer not to see this query on this list; but I'm asking because it is probably the forum where I'm most likely to get a good answer! I'm interested in the provenance of the name "normal distribution" (for what I'd really prefer to call the "Gaussian" distribution). According to Wikipedia, "The name "normal

Mmm, I (respectfully) disagree. One of the unstated objectives of mechanisms like this list is to evangelize the platform. Obviously, we all want it to do well. You can only do that by creating
