Question marks, asterisks, colons in filenames

and Windows-boxes, but both Systems have trouble with the characters
mentioned above.
My question is how Samba can help me to map these characters to
something else so that the files become usable on the Windows/Mac side
*without destroying the readability of the filenames entorely*. Hashing
into 8.3 random character sequences with "mangled names = yes" is not
really an option.
What is the successor of the removed "mangled map" option? I did not
find anything in the current man page of smb.conf (5).

Windows 2000 SP2 WINS server<--- vpn ---> Samba 2.0.10 WINS server
RedHat 7.1 running FreeS/WAN and Samba 2.0.10
connects to a DHCP Win2k server box using ipsec. At first I was
implementing Samba 2.0.7 as a WINS server and was encountering a problem
where 'smbclient -M W2kserver' and 'smbclient -L W2kserver' (where W2kserver
is netbios name of w2k box) would give me Win2k side server stats/send
message to win2k box, but I could not ping

He creado los histogramas, y los he guardado en función de la referneica en una variable:
histograma<-tapply(datos$consumo,datos$Material,function(x)hist(x,col=8)
Pero ahora la variable histograma como array, donde estan las 300 referencias.
Si entor en una, por ejemplo, histograma[1], veo como es un tipo list con los siguientes campos:
$breaks
[1] 0.0 0.2 0.4 0.6 0.8 1.0
$counts
