console sound
...rchased a Creative Labs "Soundblaster PCI 128-Voice" soundcard ($13). This card is on the "approved" RedHat list. However, the documentation inside the package says "VIBRA 128". Anyhow, kudzu doesn't see then card. The soundcard detection program says "Ensoniq, ES1371 (AudioPCI-97), module es1371", which seems normal. However, there is no sound. Does anyone have experience with this? Thanks, Mike

MB soundcards and PCI soundcards
Here's a problem that I have uncovered on two entriely separate machines using the latest icecast2 and ices2 software. Even when the onboard soundcard is disabled, the PCI soundcard (which has been both a Creative Live! and an Ensoniq soundcard) is unable to accept input or stdin audio. If I enable the onboard soundcard everything works well and I can stream audio using icecast and ices. But using the PCI soundcard with the onboard card disabled, no input is detected. I have tested this so far on only RH9 with the latest updates...

Stupid question about recording prompts
I am, as this question will make very obvious, not exactly a guru when it comes to audio under Linux. I'd like to record some prompts using a nice microphone and my Ensoniq sound card, and then convert them to gsm/wav for use with asterisk. What Linux command would I use to a) do the recordings, and then b) convert them to the appropriate formats? I know there are sampling/stereo/platform issues, and am hoping to save a bit of trial-and-error time. Thanks. B.

The Hercules Game Theatre XP, the M-Audio Delta Theatre ($$$), etc. I have a 4 year old 4 channel sound card ( Ensoniq AudioPCI , 20 USD ). Almost all newer cards support 5.1 output, like the SB Live! 5.1 series. That is 6 analog outputs. A Live! Player 5.1 is 40 USD here at my place. > Most people don't have them. Red Hat patch kills streaming
...ard, but then it played sound no problem. Played some MP3s to test. So I did another quick re-install to see if I was crazy and without patching the kernel, icecast, lame and MuSE fired right up. No problem. Came out of the blackout streaming. I am using the es1371 module for sound, or the Creative Ensoniq AudioPCI 1371 card. The box is an AMD Athlon 1800 with 512 megs of RAM. Pretty generic. Has anyone else seen this? Would this justify a bug report to the Red Hat guys or could it be icecast? Thanks. can't get oss console working.
...segfault with the current version of alsa unless you add #define ALSA_PCM_OLD_HW_PARAMS_API #define ALSA_PCM_OLD_SW_PARAMS_API to the top of chan_alsa.c. Even then, though, it doesn't work right. Playing sound works, but recording doesn't work at all. You just get nothing. I also tried an Ensoniq ES1371 AudioPCI sound card. With alsa drivers, it behaves just like the VT82C686. With oss drivers, it mostly works, except the sound level of things recorded with the mic is way way too low, no matter how I adjust the mixer. So, any suggestions? Does anyone have a working console with asterisk,...

However, when I restart * the clicking resumes. I'm using an Adtran 750. The sound card is Ensoniq es1371 PCI, and there is also an onboard VIA sound system. Has anyone else seen this? Thanks, Mike
