Hessian?
I am new to 'R' and also new to the concept of a 'Hessian' with non-linear optimization. I would like to avoid going through all of the reference articles given with ?optim as access to a library is not handy. Would someone be able to elighten me on what is in the Hessian matrix if 'hessian = TRUE' with optim? The documentation indicates that this is a numerically differentiated Hessian. So I am assuming that some small delta is chosen. How is the delta chosen ?
Thank you.

Contrasts for ordered factors
Dear all,
I do not seem to grasp how contrasts are set for ordered factors. Perhaps someone can elighten me?
When I work with ordered factors, I would often like to be able to reduce the used polynomial to a simpler one (where possible). Thus, I would like to explicetly code the polynomial but ideally, the intial model (thus, the full polynomial) would be identical to one with an ordered factor.

Newbie help with ANOVA and lm.
...n finding the degrees of freedom you split the asssign matrix with itself. I am having a hard time seeing that this ever produces degrees of freedom that are different. So I get that the vector 'df' would always be something like [2,2,dfr]. But that is obviously wrong. Would someone care to elighten me on what the code above is doing?
Thank you.

Having trouble with plot.survfit and fun="cloglog"
...<= 0 omitted from logarithmic plot in: xy.coords(x, y,
xlabel, ylab
el, log)
This does display the right plot but I am confused about how the xaxis
is computed. The first tick mark is labeled with 100, the next with
200 right up to 600, but the entire plot is drawn between 0 and 100.
Please elighten me as to what I'm not understanding about fun="cloglog"
and log scales.

Dovecot/Pigeonhole Issue (UTC modtime instead of localtime)
Hi List,
We are using the following setup:
Dovecot-2.2.18
Pigeonhole-0.4.8 (for Dovecot-2.2)
After the mail is finally delivered via a fileinto by the Sieve filter
it gets an updated timestamp (modification time).
The server has localtime setup correctly IMO (UTC +0200), but still the
delivered mail is setup as being two hours old.
I think I found out that the function
