Manually mounting partitions in "linux rescue" mode
I boot from the installation DVD, with an already existing CentOS 5.5
system on my hard disks. I have separate boot, root, and home
partitions. I have moved the boot partition and now I need to
re-initialize grub from rescue mode.
Attempting to use 'rescue mode" to automatically mount my system under
/mnt/sysimage eventally fails with an error message, which essentially

Deleting packages
When choosing to delete packages, Synaptic will tell the user what other
packages are dependant and therefore have to be added to the delete list
also, and then will automatically add those dependant packages to the
delete list if one chooses to go ahead with the original package
deletion. I did not notice such functionality in YumEx. Does it exist ?
If it does not exist, is it possible to

CentOS 5.4 Upgrade installation failure
CentOS 5.3 has been running fairly good except for a slow ethernet
connection so I thought I would upgrade to CentOS 5.4 to see if that
improved things. I had previously changed fstab and menu.lst to use UUID
instead of LABEL in order to insulate myself from partition label
changes I wanted to make. This worked fine in CentOS 5.3.
When I attempted to upgrade from 5.3 to 5.4 using the

Boot message about "resume device"
When I boot CentOS 5.5, I receive the message:
Unable to access resume device ( UUID = some UUID etc. )
How do I find out what actual device to which this UUID refers ? It does
not appear to be a block device since it does not show when I try 'blkid'.
To what does "resume device" refer ?
The boot succeeds but I would like to know what this messages means.

Boot from CD
I am running CentOS 5.5 and I want to create a boot CD so that if my
boot partition is moved I can still boot from the boot CD and
re-initialize grub again. Is there some easy to use utility which will
enable me to do this ?

Unable to mount devices in rescue mode
Booting to CentOS 5.5 works and I am able to login with all my devices
mounted. When I boot from the install DVD and type "linux rescue" I
eventually get the message, after attempting to have one of the screens
mount my partitions in read/write mode:
"An error occurred trying to mount some or all of your system. Some of
it may be mounted under /mnt/sysimage."
But nothing

Desktop link to URL with port number fails in CentOS 4.4
If I create a desktop item which is a link to a URL with a port number,
opening the desktop item fails. I can create the desktop item by
dragging and dropping the URL from my web browser, firefox.
The desktop item, when I attempt to open it, brings up a message box
with the title "Cancel Open?", a lightbulb icon, a message "Opening
'myURL:myPort'. You can stop this

Using Synaptic with Cent OS 4.4

there any issues using Synaptic with the CentOS 4.4 repositories ?

Java JDK on CentOS 4.4
I did not choose Java when I installed CentOS 4.4 and I want to install
a JDK to do Java programming. What is the default Java JDK for CentOS
4.4 ? I see under YumEx very little which looks like a Java JDK. Is
there one in the distribution ? Is there a way to get Sun's latest JDK 5
installed safely and successfully on CentOS 4.4, perhaps via an RPM for
it tailored to CentOS 4.4, or should

Desktop link for NTFS .htm file type asks for run or display in CentOS 4.4
I created a desktop launcher whose type was a link and pointed to an
NTFS file on a read-only ( ro ) partition. When I open the launcher it
always asks me whether I want to display or run the file. Of course I
want display it and when I click on that button it displays it in my
browser, Firefox, correctly. It is neverthless onerous to constantly be
asked and have to then click the correct

Firefox 2.0 on CentOS 4.4
I realize that CentOS 4.4 is all about stability but I would still like
to install Firefox 2.0 on it, since I am sharing my Firefox project
across OSs on a multi-boot machine and the other OSs have Firefox 2.0.
Is it possible to get CentOS 4.4 to work properly with Firefox 2.0 and,
if so, does anybody know of a CentOS 4.4 repository which has a Firefox
2.0 RPM available.

Switching from Vesa driver to video adapter driver fails
The Vesa driver works fine with CentOS 4.4. I have an NVidia 6200 video
adapter. I go to Applications | System Settings | Display | Hardware tab
and find my video adapter in the list and set it. The dialog tells me I
have to log out for it to take effect, so I duly do that. I then getting
a message from a non-graphics screen saying that the attempt to switch
to the video adapter failed. When

Installing CentOS7 boot loader into the /boot partition
I did not see any way, during the CentOS7 install, to install the
CentOS7 boot loader into the /boot partition rather than to the MBR of a
drive. How does one do this in the installation of CentOS7 ?

UPS support on CentOS 4.4
I have an APC Back-UPS XS1500 powering my computer. It may be overkill
for a single computer but it makes me feel secure.
Gnome power management will not install on CentOS 4.4 because of
dependency problems.
I have installed the acpupsd daemon and this will protect me against
power failure but the GUI interface to it, gapcmon, will not install due
to dependency problems. I know that some
