smbclient gives strange results
Hello,
I've been using Samba on a Sun server but we recently discontinued using the
Sun and switched to using Samba on a RH linux server. I can't get file
sharing to work on the new server. When I test the connection to the samba
server (velar) by running smbclient //velar/homes -U eric I get an error
message referring to NT_STATUS_BAD_NETWORK_NAME. I can't find any reason
for this

get command history?
Hello,
We are using R 1.4.1 on Solaris 8. The director of our lab says that it
should be possible, when using R interactively, to repeat your previous
command by pressing the up-arrow key (similar to the command history
feature in the tc shell). I have not been able to find any mention of this
command history feature in any of the R documentation, but the lab director
is adamant that this

Linux installation problem
Hello everyone,
I downloaded the latest Linux version of R and tried installing it, but
during the installation process I found that this version of R requires tcl
8.3 and tk 8.3. The problem is that I've been unable to find Linux
versions of tcl 8.3 and tk 8.3. The only Linux versions of tcl/tk I've
been able to find are 8.4. Has anybody been successful in getting R to
install on

Another question about getting command history
Hello everyone,
Thanks to the people who so kindly responded to my earlier query about how
to get R to retrieve my previous command when I hit the up-arrow
key. Several people pointed out to me that in order to enable this feature
I need to re-install R with the GNU readline library. My question now
is: how do I accomplish this? Can anyone tell me what changes I need to
make to the

1.7.0 installation problem
Hello,
I'm having a problem trying to upgrade from R 1.6.0 to 1.7.0 on our
Suns. We're running Solaris 8 and we're using gcc 3.2.3. The problem is
that I get a bunch of error messages about a missing subroutine
Rdconv::fill during the "make" of 1.7.0, although I didn't have this
missing subroutine problem back when I installed 1.6.0. Can anyone suggest
how I can

Linux R installation problem, never mind....
Hi friends,
Please disregard my previous plea for help. I finally found the tcl/tk
packages I needed in order to get the Linux version of R to install. The
tcl/tk packages can be found at http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/tcl/.

installation problem with 2.3.0
Hello,
I'm in the process of trying to upgrade our R software from version 2.2.3
to 2.3.0 on our Sun workstations. In the installation process I'm
encountering some puzzling errors whe I do the 'make install.' After
installing the doc files successfully the installation process crashes
while trying to install the etc files, with the following messages:

Win2k/Samba3 issue
Hello,
I said earlier that out big Samba problem appeared to be completely
resolved after I finally made sure to get a clean install of Samba 3 and
ensured that the daemons were being started up properly. However, that was
before I checked on our win2K clients! We have an odd little problem here,
in that all of our WinXP clients can connect to any of our Samba shares
without any problem,

unwanted roaming profiles
Hello,
I have a minor problem wherein Samba is creating roaming profiles for users
who logon to our lab's domain. I don't want roaming profiles. Since I'm
not using the "logon path" command in my smb.conf, and I don't have a
[profile] share in my smb.conf either, I cant' figure out why Samba keeps
wanting to create roaming profiles. Anyone have any ideas about

After Samba upgrade, trust relationship always fails
Hello,
For a long time I've been running Samba 3.5.10 as a domain controller on RH Enterprise 5, with Windows 7 clients. Everything has worked fine. But since I recently upgraded to Samba 3.6.4, I have a persistent problem with users not being able to login to the client machines successfully because they get the "Trust relationship has failed" message. I can join the client

OK, one more time on the PDC thing
My apologies, I'm terribly sorry to belabor these PDC issues to the point
where everyone is undoubtedly tired of hearing about them, but I have
become absolutely obsessed with trying to solve this PDC problem. Here is
what is happening now. I'm trying to connect to the Samba server which is
set up as the PDC (domain PLAB) from windows client "venus". Windows

Samba 3 startup
Hello,
I'd like to see if I can get some clarification on what is the preferred
method of starting the Samba daemons (note that we are using Solaris, not
Linux). This is something that I'm not able to find any explanation of in
any of the Samba 3 documentation that I've looked at so far. In Samba 2 I
would have the Samba daemons started up by the following in my /etc/inetd.conf:

domain/WINS problem
Hello,
Concerning my problem with not being able to connect to our domain with our
Samba clients, there is a further piece of evidence in my samba.log, and
I'm hoping that someone who is more experienced in dealing with WINS and
domains can clarify the nature of these messages from the log:

clarification needed: $ in machine name?
Hello,
Sorry to be a pest, but I need to try to get some clarification of how the
machine name works when setting up a machine account on the Samba
server. The Samba How-To page
http://us3.samba.org/samba/docs/man/Samba-HOWTO-Collection/samba-pdc.html#id2536400
talks about the "common error" of including the $ in the machine name on
the server machine. However, all of the

can't contact domain
Hello everyone,
Once again I'm trying to set up our Samba server to operate as a PDC, now
that I've verified that I have a clean install of the Samba 3
software. However there are some difficulties with this. On my client
machine when I try to set the domain name in the system control panel, I
get an error message saying that the domain could not be contacted. I've

setting up Samba server as a PDC
I'm still trying to set up our Samba server as a PDC. I tried to do this
yesterday and couldn't get my clients to recognize the server as a domain
controller. Someone on this list suggested that I upgrade my Samba from
version 2 to 3. I've done that, and things seem to be a little better than
they were yesterday. Now when I go to my Windows client machine and try to

query about PC setups
Hello,
My boss claims that it is possible to set up a PC as a Samba client in such
a way that every Windows user who logs in to that PC will automatically be
connected to a certain designated Samba share, without the user himself
having to map the network drive to the Samba share. That is, the boss
claims that I, as the administrator of the PC, have the power to set up

Samba installation discrepancies
Samba colleagues,
I promise to limit my postings to this list to one message per day from now
on, and to keep my messages focussed on very specific technical issues. I
think I have gotten over my initial panic at the weirdly broken Samba
installation and am now in a troubleshooting mode.
The drama of all my Samba 3 difficulties now seems to be due to a faulty
Samba installation. Symptoms
