Samba 3.4.2 with Solaris ZFS Snaphots
Hi,
I'm trying to make samba working with Solaris ZFS Snaphots.
Solaris 10 is running on a x64/X86 box which is both Samba (3.4.2)
server and Zfs server.
I created home/delaye filesystem with home zfs pool.
# zpool list
NAME SIZE USED AVAIL CAP HEALTH ALTROOT
home 1.98G 2.60M 1.98G 0% ONLINE -
home/delaye 2.47M 1.95G 1.66M /home/delaye

Samba on opensolaris's ZFS
Hi list,
Does anybody have first-hand experience on running Samba off of Sun's ZFS? I am
specifically looking for compatibility between the two and performance of the
combo.
The reason I am looking into this is I find ZFS features of in snapshotting
etc. very attractive.
Any input appreciated,
Koen Smeets

ZFS shadow copy patches
...technical/2007-February/051510.html
Reviewing the release notes for the upcoming 3.2 release:
http://us3.samba.org/samba/ftp/pre/WHATSNEW-3-2-0pre2.txt
I don't see any mention of changes to shadow copy support.
I'm tentatively planning to use the binary module Ed supplied
(http://www.edplese.com/samba-with-zfs.html) but would prefer not to deploy
a configuration providing functionality that wouldn't eventually be
incorporated into mainline Samba.
Thanks...

str[fp]time - what is this and can I add padding? smb.conf
...a little and want to add
additional information to the snapshot name - it's parsed by str[fp]time with
the format:
%Y%m%d-%H%M%S
I want to add a 6 arbitrary characters to the beginning or end of this and
still have it parsed correctly.
Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks

Questions from a windows admin - Samba, shares & quotas
Hey folks,
This may sound a little crazy, but I''m a long time windows admin planning on rolling out a Solaris server to act as our main filestore, and I could do with a bit of advice.
The main reason for switching is so we can use snapshots. With Samba and Microsoft''s Shadow Copy Client we can backup everybody''s files and give users the power to restore files

shadow_copy for homes share
I have successfully setup shadow_copy for normal shares on our samba
test server. However, I cannot get it working for the homes share
because of its uniqueness.
Here is the homes share:
[homes]
comment = Home Directories
read only = No
create mask = 0700
directory mask = 0700
browseable = no
fstype = XFS 1.2
vfs object = shadow_copy

Accidentally added disk instead of attaching
Hi,
I wanted to add a disk to the tank pool to create a mirror. I accidentally used zpool add ? instead of zpool attach ? and now the disk is added. Is there a way to remove the disk without loosing data? Or maybe change it to mirror?
Thanks,
Martijn

enterprise scale redundant Solaris 10/ZFS server providing NFSv4/CIFS
We are looking for a replacement enterprise file system to handle storage
needs for our campus. For the past 10 years, we have been happily using DFS
(the distributed file system component of DCE), but unfortunately IBM
killed off that product and we have been running without support for over a
year now. We have looked at a variety of possible options, none of which
have proven fruitful. We are

idmap backend with Active Directory LDAP
Everything that I have read about 'idmap backend' describes it being used
with a standalone LDAP server. Is it possible though to configure Samba
to store idmaps directly in an Active Directory LDAP using 'idmap backend'?
This would obviously involve some schema changes to Active Directory, but
other than that I can't think of any technical reasons why this would not
be
