Ecological Niche Modelling on R
Dear all, I have strong interest on Ecological Niche Model, which in general use a set of environmental variables (continuous, categorical etc) and Presence (or Presense/Absence) records for species. I think that "grasp" and "adehabitat" packages could help me on these tasks. My input layers are on ASC format, and the record...

Dear all, For my PhD study I'm looking for relevant courses/workshops (short term) in ecological data anlysis with R in Europe. After 2 days searching I'm convinced that google is probably not the right medium to find this information. If anyone can help me I will be most grateful. Best regards - J. Task View for ecology/environmental science
Having just discovered "Task Views" I see there isn't one for ecology/environmental science. I don't have the expertise to help with this, but I think it would be a very useful addition if there was any person (s) on the list willing to help create such a Task View. I am sure the maintainers of the Task Views will pick up on any responses to this post from volunteers. I

Help with permutation function from Turner et al. 2010 (Ecology)
Hello, I'm using R code that includes a residual permutation that was written as a supplement to the paper: Turner et al. 2010. A general hypothesis-testing framework for stable isotopes ratios in ecological studies. Ecology 91:2227-2233. The supplemental code is available at: http://www.esapubs.org/archive/ecol/E091/157/suppl-1.htm When I execute the function, no warnings are given (seems fine). But the resulting output matrix is simply a matrix of repeating rows (i.e., it appears as if the function...

Hi, I have two tables and I need to merge both. I use the merge command, but in this way the name must be exactly. How I can make to compare independently of upper or lower-case? Look: data1<-data.frame(journal=c("Ecology","Environmental Entomology","Neotropical Biology And Conservation"))

Ecological Detective worked solutions [R-wiki]
Hi, I've added several pages of worked solutions for the book Ecological Detective by Hilborn and Mangel to the R-wiki. I have posted solutions for chapters 3-6, which includes some really horrible direct translati...

ecological meaning of randomForest vegetation classification?
...dle leaved evergreen forest, dense broad-leaved forest, barren, etc.). A statistician advised me to use the randomForest package in R and using a sub-set to generate the random Forest, I get a very good prediction for the rest. However, I need to evaluate how meaningful this classification is in an ecological sense (boreal trees should not play a role in the definition of tropical land-cover types, for example), otherwise I cannot judge the quality of the vegetation model's output. Unfortunately, randomForest gives me about 15.000 splits of which about 5000 are end branches (rough guess), so it'...
