Persistent session cookies?
It seems Rails sessions by default only last, well, a browsing session. If the Rails app keeps track of logged-in state by sessions, that state doesn''t survive restarting the browser. How best to change this behaviour, to make the session cookie live forever, or at least beyond browser restarts? It was suggested to me on IRC to combine sessions with code to generate a unique id and

formatting numbers with commas
I needed to format numbers with commas to make it more human readable. Here''s how I did it. def commify(number) c = { :value => "", :length => 0 } r = number.to_s.reverse.split("").inject(c) do |t, e| iv, il = t[:value], t[:length] iv += '','' if il % 3 == 0 && il != 0 { :value => iv + e, :length =>

ogg123 buffer -- help!?!?
Sorry -- it's 1:00 AM and I'm tired. Can somebody give me some ideas on how to do buffering cross-platform? open (O_NONBLOCK) - ??? select (fd+1, NULL, &set, NULL, &tv) - NO - Unix only fork(); open (block) -- Unix only threading -- cross-platform mess plugin modules - too much work ifdefs - evil ??? I'm probably missing something obvious, right? See line 1. Kenneth

Approaches to using RUnit
Having used JUnit and PyUnit, I was pleased to see the release of the RUnit package on CRAN. I'm wondering if there are any RUnit users out there that would be willing to share some tips on how they organize their code to work with RUnit. Specifically, I'm wondering about the best way to load/import/source the functions to be tested. I would like to end up with a script, testall or some

<fallback-override>
Hello! I have a fallback mount point with <fallback-override>. When my source client reconnects, the media player is moved mack to the right mount point but the media players I have tried (mplayer and VLC) keep playing the fallback. Is this because of my source client (liquidsoap), icecast or the media players? I think I noticed some message in mplayer about mime type or something.

Weird USB lockup with Linksys USB100TX NIC
So I have one of these, that I bought cheap on eBay. It was working just fine on my main -STABLE workstation (Abit KG7 motherboard), up until last Friday when I moved it onto the VIA EPIA-M machine I'm building. The NIC was detected OK as aue0, then the machine locked up running dhclient. It turns out that it wasn't really hung, but apparently spinning in the kernel on behalf of

Computing means, variances and sums
There has been a recent thread on R-help on this, which resurrected concepts from bug reports PR#1228 and PR#6743. Since the discussion has included a lot of erroneous 'information' based on misunderstandings of floating-point computations, this is an attempt to set the record straight and explain the solutions adopted. The problem was that var(rep(0.02, 10)) was observed to be (on

Newbie question about soundcards
Here's what I got: a running shoutcast server, and doing just fine thanks. machine is a crapola with a 486 dx/4 24meg, running SuSE kernel 2.2.16, no X, no soundcard, runs secondary DNS and serves NFS. nothing else, hell, doesn't even have a monitor attached. http, sendmail and others run on another box that has more *oomph*, in case you're wondering. icecast 1.4.0 compiled on the

Inheritance Question
Hi, My application has a table of People that has information about them, and I want to have a subset of those people as Users - people that can login to the application. What is the best way to do this? Add columns to People that only Users would use? I''ve read the threads on single table inheritance, but it seemed a little bit wasteful: 10,000 people vs 50 users For those more

problem creating a systemd service
Hello! Icecast behaves oddly for me in debian testing, somehow the permissions on my log file directory was set to root:adm if I remember things right. Also there was no systemd service starting when I tried to start from /etc/init.d, somehow init services refer to systemd services nowadays whether they exist or not. I tried to create a systemd service looking like this: [Unit]
