bogus motherboard? IOMMU does not work
Hi all,
I would like to get my system to work with IOMMU.
(The long-term goal is VGA passthru.)
System is as follows:
CPU: Core 2 Duo E6600
MB: Foxconn G9657MA-8EKRS2H (w. latest bios: 631F1P61)
Virtualization support is enabled in BIOS. (These is only one option.)
Hypervisor: xen 4.0.0 from Debian, AMD64
Xen config: iommu=verbose
output of xen dmesg is attached.
HVM domains work (lasd tried with xen 3.2), but IOMMU is disabled,

64 bit
I need to get a new computer and am looking at Intel E6600 Core 2
Duo. I'll be running Centos5.
I have a couple of VMware Workstation 6 licenses, is there a way to
install and run 64 bit inside an VMware virtual machine?
I don't care about performance, it's only for testing and
debugging purposes. This is not production.
Any suggestion...

hvm performance

try windows as I have a new server. All seemed to go fine except
performance is *horrible* - I''m currently installing Win2003 SP2 and
it''s been running over 12 hours (thank god for vnc) - each individual
file is taking between 3 and 4 seconds each.
Server is an intel E6600 with plenty of memory so should be pretty fast.
I had a look around and it is apparently the performance of qemu-dm
that''s critical. That''s currently pinned at 1% CPU usage and using
332MB of memory (pushing dom0 into swap as I only gave it 256MB) - is
this normal? CPU load...

Which hardware component causes performance loss (Starcraft)
...o know which component needs to be substituted to get a better performance in Starcraft 2.
On windows 7 64 bit I get on highest graphics settings something at 30 fps. On my openSuse 11.3 64 bit system with wine 1.3 and nvidia driver I am only able to reach 18 fps or so.
My PC:
- 6 GB RAM
- Intel E6600 @ 2 x 2.40GHz (only 60% while playing)
- Nvida Geforce 8800 GTS 768 MB ram with recent driver 256.44
I am using a dual screen setup, but when playing one screen gets disabled automatically (twinview + modelines in xorg.conf).
- Screen resolution while playing: 1680x1050
- Wine version: 1.3.0

Whine in dual core Windows PC if R uses full CPU capacity
Dear R-developers,
the following may seem a weird question for R-devel – I try anyway, because it
does seem to be related to usage of R and R's way of interacting with the
hardware.
When running R (2.4.0) on my new dual core Windows XP system (Intel Core 2 Duo
E6600, Mainboard ASUS P5B, BeQuiet Power Unit), I observe various types of
sounds (not related to fans) when running at full usage of at least one of the
cores.
The most annoying sound – a high-pitched noise like a whine – I have so far
observed running simulations in R only and couldn’t reproduce wi...

For-Loop faster than vectorized code?
...on where to optimise
my code?
And why is it possible that the calculation is faster when conducted based
on loops? Might there be a memory problem due to the huge matrices (one
[240000 x 25] instead of 800 [300 x 25]-matrices) I have to work with in the
vectorized code?
My system is a Core 2 Duo E6600 with 2x2.4 GHz and 2GB RAM. However, I get a
new PC with 4 GB RAM soon. Maybe that would help?
Thanks for your suggestions in advance!

HVM Windows: disk image vs. zvol - which is better?
...a pretty good performance (on nv 77 a.t.m.), but it''s now on ufs. Can I expect the prformance top drop by only moving the same image to zfs? (Sun X2100 with 1G RAM. I know it isn''t much, but that''s what we have for now. Later there will be more! The test machine is a C2D E6600 1GB RAM, sata hdd''s, all slices UFS.)
2.) Can I grow Windows'' emulated partition by adding space to the image file? Is there a tool for it? I know it can be done on a zfs. It''s not a big deal though, as you can add space by using junctions on win. That is the case now -...

Wine and 3D rendering issues

Below are some compile times for 2.6.20 on an fx-62

dual channel ram (See previous posts with subject
of 'segfaults with 8gig of ram' for more details.)
It seems dual channel will compile a kernel faster,
but only gained around 30 seconds over 20 minutes.
Below are the shortest/longest compile times of

Ubuntu vs Mac OS X
Hi !
I have installed R-2.7.0 64-bits on a computer where the new Ubuntu
version (8.04) was installed. This computer is a 3.2 GHz Dual-core with
2 Gb of RAM.
To test how fast (I though !) this machine is, I compared two simple
matrix manipulations between Ubuntu and my laptop (a MacBook Pro 2.2 GHz
with also 2 Gb of RAM under Mac OS X 10.5.2). By the way, I install the
normal version of R

Speed up R
Dear R Users,
I hope that there is someone who has an experience with a problem that I
describe below and will help me.
I must buy new desktop computer and I'm wondering which processor to choose
if my only aim is to speed up R. I would like to reduce a simulation time -
sometimes it takes days. I consider buying one of them (I'm working under
Win XP 32 bit):
1. Intel Core2 Duo E6700
