cvs bulid breaks on slackware
cvs code from this morning (about 9am PST) breaks on slackware 7.1 w/ gcc 2.95.2.1 with an undefined reference to session_setup_sia in session.o. this seems to be the culprit here: #ifdef HAVE_OSF_SIA #else /* HAVE_OSF_SIA */ session_setup_sia(pw->pw_name, ttyname); since i have no idea what that's trying to accomplish (and seems to be a bit backwards to me from looking

SAMBA, NIS and NFS
Hi All Some background first I have been asked to set up an environment involving three machines 1. A windows 2000 client 2. A Solaris 8 E450 / NIS client 3. An SGI IRIX fileserver/ NIS server holding user home directories The E450 NFS mounts the SGI and users have their home directories on the SGI. When users want to test their application software they ssh from their windows client into the Solaris machine and use their files in t...

Samba replacing NFS
Hi, I have a number of web servers that mount their /htdocs (and /log and /cgi-bin) directories from a large file server. I am currently using NFS for this. The web servers are Linux, the file server a Sun E450. NFS seems dreadfully slow, and I keep reading about how it doesn't do file locking. Is there a good reason not to simply use samba, and share the volumes with samba from the Sun, and use smbmount on the linux machines? Will this not be faster? (It could hardly be slower). It seems perverse t...

performance problems with rc10 and solaris 10
Hi, i have 2 dovecot imap server running on solaris 10 The primary server with dovecot 1.0.alpha4 is running with best performance on Sun Sparc E4k5 with 8x 450MHz The secondary with rc10 has ugly performanceproblems on Sun E450 wth 4x 450MHz. Every new imap process takes permanent 25% cpu usage List the folder and fetch message are both slowy! Both servers are configred with ldap backend preventive i deleted for rc10 the complet index and controlfiles, because the spooldir is a sync from the masterserver with dovecot...

Unsolicited oplock breaks
Dear All, we've been having some intermittent problems with students who's home directories are on a Sun E450 running Samba 2.0.6. I'm not totally convinced that the problem is caused by the server, but may be the network. However, I've had a look at the log.smb file and I'm seeing some error messages that I've not come across before: [2001/02/23 18:20:40, 0] smbd/oplock.c:process_local_...

CentOS 4.2beta on Sun Ultra 5 (sparc64)
...expected with a new architecture. Most notably, OpenOffice.org is not there. I did run firefox, gimp, thunderbird, and xchat flawlessly though. I can't comment at all on local X11 console support because my sun boxes run headless. This is inspiring me to save up for a loaded Sun E420R or E450 to run at home and replace my Duron-based web/mail server. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... rsync speed
Hi, I poked around the website and did some digging in the list archives but thought i'd better pose my question here. I'm using rsync to synchronize two directories on a Solaris 8 e450 server. rsync copies about 22GB per night. It seems to take 50 minutes for the copy to complete. which seems a little bit slow. I'm currently running # /opt/bin/rsync -v rsync version 2.3.1 Copyright Andrew Tridgell and Paul Mackerras If i upgrade to 2.5.6 can i expect to see a speed increa...

ldap_bind: Can't contact LDAP server (Solaris 2.6)
Hi, I'm having a problem with one of the servers, an Sun E450 Solaris 2.6 box, that after some time it will no longer be able to send out LDAP requests to the LDAP server. The response to every ldap query is: ldap_bind: Can't contact LDAP server Checking the netstat output I see a lot (over 300) of TIME_WAIT state request to the ldap server: r0...

"Too many open files" error
We have a Sun E450 running Solaris 8 and Samba 2.2.8a as our domain controller. We have had no problems with Samba until earlier this week when we have started to get lots of these errors in log.smbd: [2003/08/08 16:29:14, 0] lib/debug.c:(348) Unable to open new log file /home/samba_pearl/var/log.smbd: Too many op...

ZFS questions with mirrors
...eplace the drive, everything still working. No outage. So the big questions to Tech support: 1. Is this a "known property" of ZFS ? That when a drive from a hot swap system is removed the server hangs ? (We were attempting to simulate a drive failure) 2. Or is this just because it was an E450 ? Ie, would removing a zfs mirror disk (unexpected hardware removal as opposed to using zfs to remove the disk) on a V240 or V480 cause the same problem ? 3. What could we expect if a drive "mysteriously failed" during operation of a server with a zfs mirror ? Would the server hang like i...

Severe problem with Samba
Dear All, we are experiencing severe problems with Samba 2.2.0 (with quota support) running on a dual processor (400MHz) Sun E450 running Solaris 2.7. This is used as a central file server for student diskspace, accessed by approx 1200 PCs running NT 4. Up until recently we experienced some, what we assume to be, loading issues with connections during the middle of the day being slow. However, recently we have been encount...

Problem with Samba on Solaris 2.6
Hi All I downloaded the binary package of Samba 2.2.2 on Friday from one of the Samba mirror sites, I think Belgium, and installed it on a Sun E450 running Solaris 2.6. Today everything has fallen flat on its face. Unfortunately I am on holiday this week so not able to deal with the problem directly, but via telephone calls. Apparently what is happening is that smbd is gobbling up all the memory, the system is running out of swap (/tmp hi...

Samba scaling
Andrew, Did anyone reply to you on this? By the sounds of things you are running a pair of E450's? We currently use Samba on about 6 or 7 Sun E450's and E250's, it scales very well. I have managed to have about 700-800 current clients connected from Windows 95 and 98, we also have the about 30-40 NT clients that connect regularly. I have found that Samba has scaled uniformly in i...

Siemens Gigaset IP in USA (S685 IP in particular)
For some unfathomable reason, Siemens USA doesn't offer the Gigaset IP range in the U.S. I'm particularly interested in the Gigaset S685 IP. Since it's DECT 6.0, and there's an English (UK) version, I'm thinking it should work just fine, after dealing with the walwart issue (and maybe caller ID signalling). Anyone imported one from the UK and using it in the US? for how

raidz question
Hi, I have E450 with 20 SCSI disks. 1 disk is used as a boot disk with critical filesystems like /, /usr, /var, etc. then othe 19 disks are configured with ZFS in raidz. Are there any significant performance implications of using raidz with such a large number of disks? Would there much to be gained in performance...
