Problems using gamlss to model zero-inflated and overdispersed count data: "the global deviance is increasing"
...amlss (Package gamlss version 4.0-0, R version 2.10.1, Windows XP Service Pack 3 on a HP EliteBook) to relate bird counts to habit variables. However, most models fail because “the global deviance is increasing” and I am not sure what causes this behaviour. The dataset consists of counts of birds (duck) and 5 habit variables measured in the field (n= 182). The dependent variable (the number of ducks counted)’suffers’ from zero-inflation and overdisperion: > proportion_non_zero <- (sum(ifelse(data$duck == 0,0,1))/182) > mean <- mean(data$duck) > var <- var(data$duck) > propor...

Specifying that code is called in a block
Not sure if this is possible currently. I have a section of code like this: ActiveRecord::Base.transaction do cow.save! duck.save! dog.save! end (Names changed to protect the innocent.) I''d like to specify that the saves run in a transaction. I can do ActiveRecord::Base.should_receive(:transaction).and_yield But is there any way to specify that the code is called as above, and not as cow.sa...

tree connect failed: NT_STATUS_BAD_NETWORK_NAME
Hi, I can't get access to any shares when running "smbclient //DUCK/test -U Dominic". I'm getting the message: tree connect failed: NT_STATUS_BAD_NETWORK_NAME I'm pretty sure it's authenticating properly as it says "session setup ok" in the debug output. If I enter the wrong password I get: "session setup failed: NT_STATUS_LOGON_FAI...

How to update the root hints for bind DLZ
It looks like the original intention in our code was to be able to add/modify records with the "." zone. Trying it, there seems to be other issues with using it. I'm not entirely sure if this alias is valid against Windows or for which calls. I just hacked a patch (see attached) to see if I could add or modify another name server. samba-tool dns add $DC_SERVER . @ NS testing

Need an opinion on ActiveRecord vs.(?) duck typing
...te/timestamp to my DB and comparing it with one created outside of DB/ActiveRecord afterwards. The date is burried inside an ActiveRecord object of mine and gets recorded together with everything else from it. The problem is I don''t know first hand the exact type of the date object, due to duck typing. So, the date inside an object could be virtually anything because it is passed to my objects directly from client code. But in the good real world it eventually boils down to two or three types. Maybe the most significant are the Time and DateTime classes. It happens that my (mysql, if tha...
